𝟳 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗢𝗡𝗦 𝗪𝗛𝗬 𝗦𝗢𝗠𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗠𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗦 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗔𝗟 𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗚𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡

𝟏. 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱:

The Republic of Somaliland was an independent sovereign state on 26 June 1960, with defined borders and institutions, before entering a costly union with Somalia.

𝟐. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲:

Through democratic processes and constitutional referenda, the people of Somaliland have consistently affirmed their right to determine their political future.

𝟑. 𝗔 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲:

For over three decades, Somaliland has built and sustained functioning institutions, constitutional governance and peaceful political transitions.

𝟒. 𝗔 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲:

Somaliland has built its stability through locally owned reconciliation, dialogue and institutions; demonstrating that peace can be built from within.

𝟓. 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲:

Competitive elections, peaceful transfers of power and constitutional politics have become defining features of Somaliland’s political order.

𝟔. 𝗘����𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆:

Somaliland possesses the essential attributes of effective statehood: territory, population, government, public authority and the capacity to conduct international relations.

𝟕. 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆:

Recognition of Somaliland would formalise an existing political reality and create greater opportunities for peace, regional security, trade, investment and strategic cooperation in the Horn of Africa.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, the Republic of Somaliland is not asking the world to create a new state! It is asking the world to recognize one that its people have built, sustained and defended for decades.

This is strategically significant for Somaliland and the United States of America. President Irro’s direct engagement with Washington’s policymakers comes at a critical time. Somaliland’s strategic location, maritime security role, and shared interests with the United States provide a strong foundation for a deeper, mutually beneficial partnership.

The focus now should be on converting strategic alignment into concrete outcomes.

News: #Somaliland appoints new ambassador to #Ethiopia

Somaliland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the appointment of Ambassador Sharmarke Ahmed Muhumed Gelle as its new envoy to Ethiopia, tasking him with strengthening political, economic and historical ties between the two sides.

According to the ministry, Gelle is a seasoned diplomat and public servant with 15 years of experience in Somaliland’s government and international relations. His new assignment will also focus on advancing Somaliland’s broader engagement across Africa.

Gelle previously served as Chief of Cabinet Secretaries at the Office of the President from 2015 to 2016, supporting cabinet-level decision-making and coordinating policy implementation across government institutions.

He later headed Somaliland’s Civil Service Commission, where he oversaw institutional reforms aimed at improving public-sector efficiency, accountability and service delivery. He also served as Deputy Ambassador to Kenya, contributing to Somaliland’s diplomatic engagement and regional relations, according to the ministry.

The appointment comes amid strained Ethiopia-Somalia relations following Ethiopia’s January 2024 MoU with Somaliland, which reportedly envisaged commercial and potential military access to the Red Sea in exchange for possible recognition of Somaliland. Somalia condemned the deal, while regional actors raised concerns over its implications.

Ethiopia and Somalia later reached the Ankara Declaration through Turkish mediation, effectively sidelining the MoU as Addis Abeba pursued rapprochement with Mogadishu.

Today he attends the Middle East–America Dialogue (MEAD) Summit, where he will deliver a strong message to Washington’s foreign policy and national security community:  "Somaliland stands with the United States against the forces of terrorism and coercion, just as we stand with Taiwan and Israel. We have real assets to bring to this partnership — and we are ready to deliver,” said President Irro.

Britain must recognise Somaliland

Somalia has been a byword for failed statehood and violence for so long that the calm of Somaliland, its neighbour to the north-east, feels almost miraculous.

In contrast to Mogadishu, the bustling streets of Hargeisa, #Somaliland’s capital, aren’t patrolled by grim-faced soldiers. Government offices aren’t huddled behind blast walls and protected by foreign troops.

You can wander into a restaurant and enjoy camel steaks (a national speciality) without worrying about al-Shabaab terrorists.
