We are delighted to welcome GM Oleg Korneev to the Sussex University Masters this July.
With @rpraggnachess recently grabbing the headlines by achieving a career plus score against @MagnusCarlsen at @NorwayChess, we thought it would be fitting to announce a GM who can say the same. 😉
Sussex University masters tournament is proud to have been included in the @ecfchess international series of 2026.

Big march today V Wood Green. Most importantly me and @LozHCooper have a great relationship for setting aside team performance and focussing on young players getting norms. @ECF_Chess@4NCL
Good luck to all 3 norm seekers.

“Sometimes chess stops being about winning.
At the Jonathan Hawkins Memorial Rapidplay, a tournament held in honour of the late GM Jonathan Hawkins, the result mattered far less than what it represented.
But 16-year-old FM Stanley Badacsonyi still won it.
A former student of Hawkins, he scored a perfect 6/6, finishing clear first in a room filled with players who had travelled across the UK just to remember someone who shaped their chess lives.
For memory, respect, and connection.
It was about carrying something forward.
And in the middle of it, a student ended up doing exactly that
So what does a win mean when the real story isn’t about the win?”

A student just won a memorial tournament for his former coach.
FM Stanley Badacsonyi won the Jonathan Hawkins Rapidplay with a perfect score.
Held in honour of GM Jonathan Hawkins — this wasn’t about results.
It was about legacy.

@ABadacsonyi@ecfchess@timpeterwall Frankie's speech was really powerful to listen to. It really showed the difference a good teacher can make to his students, much more than just results at the board.
Yesterday, the Jonathan Hawkins Memorial Rapidplay took place. FM Stanley Badacsonyi, won with a perfect score of 6/6. Hawkins was a former coach and friend to Stanley and his brother, Frankie, making this a very poignant victory. #chess#englishchess
