Cactus Jack, FDR's vice president.

His real name was John Nance Garner. Before becoming vice president, he was Speaker of the House, one of the most powerful men in Washington.

The master dealmaker who had spent 30 years in Congress. He'd even run for president himself before throwing his support to Roosevelt.

They started calling him Cactus Jack in the Texas legislature, where he fought to make the prickly pear cactus the state flower instead of the bluebonnet. He lost that fight, but the name stuck.

A whiskey-drinking, cigar-chomping Texan, Garner traded the Speaker's gavel for an office he came to see as useless. And he remained prickly about it.

By the late 1930s, he had broken bitterly with Roosevelt over the New Deal and FDR's decision to seek an unprecedented third term. Cactus Jack ran against the sitting President in the primary. When that plan failed, he retired to Texas for good.

His quote is now much more famous than his story.
