📝 What should be documented for an anterior shoulder dislocation? A Delphi study
This multicentre Delphi study asked: What should clinicians document after managing a shoulder dislocation in the ED?
📋 Of 85 proposed items, only 22 reached consensus.
🔍 93% showed wide variation—highlighting inconsistency in practice.
Agreed essentials included:
🔹 Whether it's a first or recurrent dislocation
🔹 Side affected
🔹 Mechanism of injury
🔹 Sensory/motor changes
🔹 Neurovascular status after reduction
🔹 Sensation & motor function (axillary, radial, median, ulnar nerves)
🔹 Range of motion
🔹 Arm function post-reduction
🔹 Imaging type and side
🔹 Direction of dislocation
🔹 Post-reduction fracture assessment
🔹 Pain/sedation given and how
🔹 Reduction technique used
🔹 Whether technique was successful
🔹 Documentation of complications
🔹 Child safeguarding screen (if relevant)
📌 This sets the stage for standardising ED notes, improving communication, and enabling higher-quality research.
