I couldn’t agree more. Opportunities are now free and widely available due to the proliferation of the internet globally.
What’s important is knowing how to play in that new world where physical proximity means little as long as you have 1) a good device, 2) high speed internet, and 3) stable electricity.
Schools are clueless.
Young people spend tens of thousands of dollars to get expensive degrees - only to discover that stable jobs now barely exist.
I mentor kids who want marketing careers. Many are angry: because they were 'promised' that a good degree = a good job.
Young people need to learn how to pitch themselves as 'solutions providers'.
Your kids will need to...
- Find problems proactively and build monetised solutions - with code, content or hardware.
- Work remotely in evolving international teams to build useful applications, websites and products.
- Pitch themselves as 'freelancers' and 'solutions providers' - not just employees who wait to be given lists of jobs to complete.
As @DanielPriestley argues: society is likely to split into a two-tier system in terms of opportunity and reward.
If you want your kids to thrive in this inherently more high-risk/high-reward world then make sure they understand how to think like a consultant, an entrepreneur and a freelancer.
'Digital skills' are not enough.
@arvidkahl I bought a @vitruvian_form. Takes up very little space in my apartment. Insanely convenient and requires almost zero thinking. It’s like a personal chef for strength training. I highly recommend.
@TaylorLagace I verify this is all true. I highly recommend working with @TaylorLagace and @kynshipco if you want to grow your brand. It’s cool if you don’t like growing your brand though - whatever you’re into 😛
@emilyhlai But your example is such a small small subset across multiple media outlets that it doesn't even begin to support your original statement of a "long, long list." If anything, that example makes it seem that all media has to be right all the time for any of it to be trusted.
Great summary of just one of the ways to leverage remote, asynchronous work to maximize freedom while still making great money anywhere in the world. Super inspiring @shl 🙌
