42 African governments endorsed the Lilongwe Ministerial Communique at #FLEX2026 — reaffirming a shared commitment to end learning poverty by 2035.
The number driving it: an estimated 9 in 10 children across Africa are affected by the foundational learning challenge.
“What we have begun here is a continuing process of collaboration.”
Prof. Gaspard Banyankimbona closed the inaugural Continental Steering Committee meeting on the @_AfricanUnion Decade of Education & Skills Development in Abidjan, last Wednesday.

The question is not “How do we produce better data?”
It is “How do we build institutions in which decisions are expected to be informed by data at ALL levels?”
A practical first step: ask for the evidence behind the policy decision.

From declaration to delivery. What the Committee must deliver!
From the @_AfricanUnion Commissioner, ADEA @ Dr @obyezeks, 6 messages from the Continental Steering Committee’s meeting in Abidjan on what the Education Decade must now deliver.
Africa’s Education Decade begins with a question: Are we ready to turn ambition into action?
Today in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, continental partners came together for the inaugural Planning and Coordination Workshop of the Continental Steering Committee for the African Union Decade of Education and Skills Development (2025–2034).
Convened under the leadership of the African Union Commission with ADEA as Secretariat and UNESCO and UNICEF as co-chairs the workshop focused on a challenge that will define the next ten years:
How do we organise ourselves to deliver measurable results for education and skills development across Africa?
Representing our AUDA-NEPAD on behalf of our HCID Director, @SymerreGrey, @BarbsGlover shared our Agency’s experience in turning continental commitments into practical programmes, strategic investments and real impact.
As lead of CESA Cluster 3 on TVET, STEM and Entrepreneurship, and co-lead of Cluster 9 on Education System Governance, Policy and Finance, we are bringing lessons from initiatives already making a difference across the continent.
The message is clear:
✅ Build on what already works.
✅ Connect education and skills with digital transformation, AI, employment and financing.
✅ Focus on implementation, accountability and measurable results.
Through initiatives such as the Skills Initiative for Africa, Energize Africa, PIPIA, AI for Development, the Continental TVET Strategy Implementation Plan and the forthcoming AUDA-NEPAD Centre of Excellence for Human Capital and Institutional Development, we are helping transform continental ambition into opportunities for Africa’s people.
Because the success of this Decade will not be measured by the number of commitments made.
It will be measured by the classrooms improved, the teachers supported, the young people equipped with relevant skills, the enterprises created, the jobs accessed and the systems strengthened.
The next ten years are an opportunity to build stronger institutions, expand quality education, accelerate inclusive digital transformation and prepare Africa’s people for the future.
The Decade has begun. Now, it is time to deliver.

Measuring learning is essential. Using evidence to improve it is the real test.
At the 67th @iea_education General Assembly in Warsaw, ADEA Executive Secretary @NSENGIYUMVAAlbe brought an African perspective to a panel on #FoundationalLearning assessment.

Africa’s bottleneck isn’t just collecting data. It’s getting results into budgets, teacher support and classrooms.
And convenings like #FLEX2026 must become platforms for accountability, not just declarations.
