I used to work in an eye clinic and knew a man whose corneal transplant went sour and inflamed, and he would come time and time again. I would see him in person and I’d let him rant about his suffering and about how there’s no god and how all he wanted to do was work. When I first met him, I thought he was smiling because he was squinting from so much pain. He was constantly applying eye drops. I was young, 17, and if I knew what was coming I would’ve done something. Probably after 3 months of seeing him, he stopped showing up. Turns out, he killed himself. And the doctor got a card from all the techs which I did not sign. He did not help this man, just lead him to the grave.

All this to say, I am acutely aware of how valid his suffering is. He is not understating anything.
