California Democrats are advancing a bill to officially recognize the Muslim holy days of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as state holidays and specifically allow public schools to teach lessons about their history. Meanwhile, California has nearly 12 million Catholics, but Easter and Good Friday are not state holidays, and state education law has no comparable holiday-specific provision for schools to develop model lessons about the religious meaning of Christmas, Easter or Good Friday.

The bill was introduced by Democratic Assemblyman Matt Haney and passed the California Assembly 64-1. It is now moving through the Senate.
