I concede Parliament probably needs a lot of work, but the committee overseeing the restoration is trying to "modernise" it rather than restore it - trying to backfit a 200 year old building for modern requirements. That of course inflates the price significantly - ramps, lifts, removing entire sections etc - and delays works.

Of course, that suits the people who think Parliament should be a hemicycle with desks, no second chamber, modern art, be functional over form.

They can pitch this unworkable fix alongside some modern monstrosity that looks sensible by comparison, which will no doubt be delivered six times over budget and four times delayed. Crucially however it will have suffocated any remaining magic, majesty, or sense of history from the national political body - which suits the soulless red guard pitching for it, because those things are an obstacle to their vision.
