Incredibly, I’m seeing people saying having your work be trained on without your consent should be an ‘honour’, because AI will become our ‘cultural memory’, and this is how you can achieve artistic immortality.

There is nuance in much of the AI debate. But this is perhaps the single worst argument I’ve heard.

First, it is a ludicrous assertion to make. It assumes AI will survive while individual works won’t; it assumes today’s models and training techniques will still be being used far in the future; and it assumes that this kind of ‘survival’ is what creators want.

Second, even if you somehow accept this dystopian vision of the future, the decision as to whether to be involved in it is clearly up to the creator.

Don’t feel pressured to consent to generative AI training because these models may be some kind of cultural library of humanity in 1,000 years. The cultural library of humanity will be the actual record of what humanity has created, not a set of model weights. The way to be included in that record is to keep creating.
