Speaking to The Economist, President Cirro acknowledged that Djibouti is the main actor destabilising the shared border with Somaliland. Djiboutian armed forces without insignia or uniforms, posing as local militias, have been fighting in the area for some time.

Somaliland should hit back at this little dictatorship hard and fast. The obese dictator & President for life who has enslaved Djiboutians should be removed sooner rather than later. His palace is less than 20km from the border area with us.

As @SenTedCruz has argued, Somaliland is a critical security and diplomatic partner for the United States, located in a highly strategic position and contributing to counterterrorism and maritime security. Following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, the case for Washington to engage more decisively has become even stronger. Cruz has urged President Trump to recognise Somaliland, arguing that doing so would advance US national security interests.

With Somaliland’s leadership heading to Washington, the time has come for President Trump to act. Recognition would formalise a proven strategic partnership, strengthen America’s position in the Horn of Africa and Red Sea, and build on the strategic shift created by Israel’s recognition.

Others are already moving swiftly, with China responding directly to Senator Cruz’s call for US recognition of Somaliland. Washington should not let others move faster in shaping the strategic future of this critical region.

وفي المقابل، تبدو السعودية منشغلة باتجاه معاكس تماماً؛ إذ تتجه، وفق تقارير، إلى تمويل وتدريب تشكيلات مسلحة في الصومال تستخدم في مواجهة صوماليلاند وزعزعة استقرارها، في تكرار لما حدث في جنوب اليمن، حيث عملت الرياض على تقوية تشكيلات مرتبطة بحزب الإصلاح على حساب قوات المجلس الانتقالي الجنوبي.
وبينما تبحث واشنطن وعواصم غربية عن شركاء محليين مستقرين وفاعلين للمساهمة في حماية خليج عدن والبوابة الجنوبية للبحر الأحمر، تراهن الرياض على سياسات قد تؤدي إلى توسيع دائرة التوتر وعدم الاستقرار في منطقة تعاني أصلاً من الحروب والإرهاب والقرصنة وتهديد الملاحة الدولية.
