Our chemical addiction to fertilizer is polluting the ocean with nutrients in such staggering amounts that a seaweed called Sargassum is running amok like kudzu.

Nutrients are being leeched from our soil and they have to go somewhere. That somewhere is the ocean, especially nitrogen from synthetic fertilizers running off farms, lawns and rivers.

It’s turned a once-contained natural phenomenon into a recurring coastal disaster.

Offshore, sargassum is a vital nursery for fish and baby turtles. On the beach it’s an ecological and economic nightmare. Places like Miami beach are strewn with the rotting seaweed and the smell is unforgettable.

We’re literally fertilizing the ocean to death, smothering nesting sites for endangered sea turtles, triggering fish kills and God knows what other harms we are doing to the aquatic ecosystem.

Don't anyone dare try to belittle me for eating beef and pork when your Doritos and pizza are literally strangling our oceans.

The explosive sargassum was mostly confined to the traditional Sargasso Sea with occasional patches; not the massive tropical blooms we're seeing now.

And for those who will say waste from cattle is also to blame, the great Sargassum algae migration didn’t get started until the 2011 and it’s gotten progressively worse.

The U.S. cattle herd peaked around 1975 at 132 million head and there was no sargassum problem. Today it's roughly 86–87 million which is the lowest in 50 years.
