Politics stops at the water’s edge: A call for unity

Generally, there is time for everything; A time for engaging internal political dialogue and a time when engaging internal political discourse is counterproductive.

Such is the case when a foreign aggression is about to take place or when the country is inflicted with insurmountable natural catastrophe. In times like this, it is critical to lineup behind national leadership. Somalia is facing such a defining moment now.

It must be reiterated that Somalia has one president and one government at a time and it’s the Federal Government of Somalia that has the constitutional mandate to rule the country- all of the country, that is.

As Somalia is on the cusp of war with Ethiopia whose desire is to grab the northern coast of Somalia by any means necessary, engaging negative political discourse anywhere is uncalled for & destructive.

In that spirit the following is advisable;

Somali Government
1. Must mobilize the full support of the people
2. Reassure that this is purely a national endeavor with no ulterior motives.
3. ⁠Seek the support of political stakeholders & regional governments.
4. ⁠Enhance/establish a team of seasoned professionals to support government strategies insuring inclusivity.

The Somali People
1. The FGS is in charge of the country’s political and defense affairs at this time.
2. ⁠Despite social, political and economic challenges our country faces today, the threat of land grab by Ethiopia is real & should worry us all. We need to stand behind our government and national leaders against this foreign aggression.
3. ⁠Border communities who feel pressured by Ethiopia should either support their government or remain silent as much as practical.
4. ⁠Social media pundits should give their government space to govern & must refrain from second guessing their efforts.

United, Somalia 🇸🇴 stands strong.
