This is your reminder to dig responsibly at the beach! 🐢
Did you know that metal shovels and holes deeper than 1 foot are prohibited on Manatee County beaches?
Large holes can pose serious risks to both people and wildlife. Sea turtles and hatchlings can become trapped in deep holes as they nest or make their way to the Gulf, and beachgoers can be injured by falling into holes or from collapsing sand walls.
If you build a sandcastle or dig in the sand, please remember to fill in any holes and flatten the area before you leave. A few moments of effort can help protect our wildlife and keep the beach safe for everyone.
Thank you for helping keep Manatee County's beaches beautiful, safe, and turtle-friendly! ☀️
Looking ahead Florida. I think it is safe to say all 23.4 million of you will see rain the next 10 days. Latest NOAA blend of models here. Tropical juice will be flowing in from the Caribbean. Not all falls at once. But some isolated areas could see several inches in any random cell or rain train that sets up. The iguanas are definitely happy!
Not sure I understand people parking in my yard.. but the artsy deterrent is back! Missing 2nd sand dollar (Helene took it) but my lovely new backflow preventer blocks that part of it 🤨
May 15 is National Endangered Species Day, and we’re celebrating a major conservation win right here in Manatee County 💚🐢
After decades of protection efforts, the Green Sea Turtle was reclassified from endangered to threatened in many populations — a huge milestone that shows conservation works. Protecting nesting beaches, reducing artificial lighting, and rescue and rehabilitation efforts have all played a role in helping these incredible animals recover.
Manatee County’s beaches provide critical nesting habitat, and simple actions like keeping beaches clean, filling in holes, turning off lights, and giving nesting turtles space help ensure this success continues for future generations.
Beach was super birdy recently! A little too peopley tho - thought they all went back up north..
Been lazy about good camera lately & phone takes lousy pics - will fix that! Gotta go see the cygnets on LBK!
Sea turtle nesting season is already underway in Manatee County, with a few nests already spotted along our beaches. As we move into May, nesting activity will continue to ramp up, making it especially important to be mindful while enjoying the shoreline.
Residents and visitors can help protect nesting turtles and hatchlings by turning off or shielding lights at night, filling in any holes in the sand, knocking down sandcastles, removing all trash and beach gear, and staying clear of marked nests. Small actions like these make a big difference in keeping our beaches safe during this critical time.
The bald eagle almost disappeared from the lower 48.
Now it’s one of the greatest wildlife comebacks in American history.
America's 250th birthday hits different when you remember that.
A little extra appreciation for everything that makes this place what it is this Earth Day. 🌎💚
Through our Love It Like a Local program, we’re working to keep these places just as beautiful for future visits as they are right now.
