These people have a completely different experience of being an academic than me. Yes, I do check citations. No, I don't just copy citations to things without reading them. Yes, if someone caught a mistaken citation in my work, I would expect them to blame me for it.

A few ideas:

1. Give up the idea that you'll ever change someone's mind. Once you let go of this, you'll have a lot more headspace to hear them out versus just respond with your points.

2. If your friend is laying out their beliefs, ask questions. Good questions. Sincere questions. Not accusatory questions ("Do you actually believe...?!"). But explore what they're saying, almost like you're a journalist, and it's your job to learn all about their perspective. (You know you're really good at this when you're able to state their views in a way *they* would agree with.)

3. It's likely true that—even if you're on opposite sides of an issue—there's *something* you agree with. After you hear them out, and you'd like to respond, start there. Say which parts you're totally on board with.

4. After you've reflected back to them what you heard them say, and where you agree, you can ask, "Do you want to hear what I think?" Maybe it feels a little funny asking permission to share your own POV, but if/when they've said "yes," they've explicitly stated that they're interested in hearing you out. This can be a minor but powerful shift. Now they're on board to listen.

5. When you're sharing your perspective, lean on the word "I." Like, "I think..." or "I feel..." instead of "Republicans..." or "Democrats..." The more you can avoid generalizations and stereotypes, the better. Stick to what you know: what you believe. You're not saying "XYZ is objectively true." You're saying, "This is how I see it." And who isn't an expert in their own story?
