Every year for the last 16 years I have devoted one week of my summer to serving The American Legion Alabama Boys State. The top male rising seniors from across the state of Alabama come together to learn about leadership, politics, and service through the formation of their own mock state government. Yesterday, students heard from their first speaker, Timmy Davis, former ambassador to Qatar. #webuildcitizenship #albs2026 #americanlegion #civics #leadership #service
As an AD, I remind our coaches that all the knowledge in the world about your sport does not matter if you cannot teach it or communicate it. Great coaches are not just experts in Xโs and Oโs, they are teachers, leaders, and communicators. Athletes do not need a coach who simply knows more, they need a coach who can connect, explain, motivate, and hold them accountable. If your players cannot understand it, trust it, or apply it, then knowledge alone has no value. The best coaches turn knowledge into growth, confidence, and ultimately wins.

Cori Close (@CoachCoriClose) shares a must-listen message on what it takes to be special.
"Do you want special? Then you better get used to hard."
"Tell me one person in this life, in any area of life, that did something special that didn't embrace hard. That didn't embrace the adversity."
Success is earned in the struggle.
"It's the people who embrace hard. Perseverance. All of those things that need to happen."
Then she got honest about her own leadership:
"Get ready to push that. Get ready to take that on for your players first so that they can see the role modeling of someone who faces hard, who embraces hard."
Leaders go first.
You can't ask your team to embrace hard if you're not willing to do it yourself.
You have to be willing to embrace adversity.
Adversity isn't a roadblock - it's the path.

The toughest opponent youโll ever face?
You.
Mike Tomlin knows it.
โThis is a man versus himself battle.โ
Great players donโt wait for competition to push them.
They push themselves.
Every. Single. Day.
COACHES: Just because a player has a bad attitude doesn't mean you don't coach them up and find ways to inspire them. As long as they're on your team, it's your responsibility to help them grow, develop, and improve. Be encouraged. Keep persevering. Stay positive. Don't give up.
Wanting to win is easy.
Behaving like a winner every day is hard.
"You have to practice and play and behave like a winner if you want to win games." - Kara Lawson ๐
As an AD, you learn quickly that the loudest voices are not always the right ones. Many are driven by personal agendas, not the mission of the program. Volume does not equal value. Stay anchored to the people and principles that actually move your program forward.
Championship Cultures Require Alignment
Alignment between ADs and Coaches
Alignment between Coaches and Athletes
Alignment between Athletes and Athletes
Alignment between Vision, Values, and Standards
