So many great ideas for onboarding students in an online environment! I’m going to apply some of these strategies for new teacher orientation in my district! #mdlc21@drjennparker@K_Grunow
Last month, Starlinks were deployed to the Wise County Public School District in rural Virginia, where ~40% of students and teachers did not have internet access at home, helping to broaden connectivity in the area
Of all the elements of the Social Presence Model, Affective Association seems to be the toughest to incorporate. Our class Flipgrid videos and sharing via Zoom definitely helps! What ways do you incorporate this element with your students? #643Sp21#GetPresent
@Sarah43947089 This is so important! I think it’s easy to focus on education but we forget how important this emotional connection is! My district has tried to share positive stories on social media and we have Schoology groups for students to connect. All these little things help.
@KaciKepferland I know so many people that have shared this same sentiment. I have open Zoom labs to support teachers in my district and I’ve had many stop in just to say hi and check in. Definitely humanizes the experience!
@Kirksey_choir This is a great idea! It might be a good place for us as teachers to share some of our more personal stories too. Making it informal might help students open up more!
@KaciKepferland Sometimes it’s hard for me to even recognize people with masks on even tougher to check engagement. It can be a struggle to get students to want their camera on during Zooms but when they do it’s so much better!
@AKlykken Yes! I’m always looking for new and engaging tools to use with students. Mixing it up on the regular increases course engagement. Lately I’ve been using Socrative for formative assessment and games. It’s been great!
@Kirksey_choir I completely agree! Students can’t really move forward confidently without regular feedback. It can help them feel more connected as well.
The teacher sets the tone for the traditional classroom likewise they also set the tone for the virtual classroom. The instructor can help define and encourage social presence by incorporating audio/video, regular messages, grading comments, humor, fun, etc. #643Sp21#SPOL
Group cohesion is something that online teachers advocated for in this study. This was achieved by allowing students to work in small groups and teach their peers. I like the idea of incorporating breakout rooms to help build this community. #643Sp21#SPOResearch1
I love the idea of using social media to encourage free flowing conversation. LMS discussions can limit us to a specific topic, but social media really allows us to branch out and connect with others! Our MALDT Facebook group has been a HUGE support for me! #643Sp21#NotADog
