It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of longtime ASFS member Jeff Sobal. Jeff was a Cornell nutrition department sociologist, an ardent supporter of food studies research, and a kind friend to all. Read his obituary here: https://t.co/sQHVcxA7gb
Our @SCSD_Food staff recently presented at the 2024 @afhvs_org and @ASFS_org Conference, speaking in a session on Food Insecurity and Food Justice about a SNAP expansion and the National School Lunch Program. We're proud of their leadership! #SCSDSuccess
🏆🏆🏆 I’m thrilled to share that my book Food Power Politics won the 2024 Association for the Study of Food & Society (@ASFS_org) First Book Prize!
ASFS is the premier professional organization for Food Studies & I am thankful to be honored by my peers! More soon. #GodIsAble 🙏🏾
The @asfs_org / @afhvs_org annual meetings are quite special. Where else can you learn about farmers in the middle, and then have the chance to taste climate change through wine (along with a social network analysis).
So thankful for this community!
And, I got to see my book!
While I got no photos, our @ASFS_org/@afhvs_org conference was a delight! So thankful to be included and getting to learn more from these food scholars working in #NewOrleans#foodstudies
Winding down our #foodstudies24 author content for this year's conference from @ASFS_org, Daniel Jaffee presents an excerpt from his latest book UNBOTTLED: https://t.co/TbwbZ2fwQg
This book and others are available at the @scholar_choice table!
Behind on my #foodstudies2024 posts because there's just so much going on! Inspiring and inspired keynote by Leah Penniman of @soulfirefarm to a full house was definitely a highlight! #foodjustice@ASFS_org
Excited about this morning's session on #foodsecurity.
First up, @mamaphilosopher Noah Hirschl & colleagues on their fabulous research at the Food Security Innovation lab @VermontFoodbank, lots of valuable lessons about collaborating with communities. #foodstudies2024@ASFS_org
Listening to a stellar panel on transnational feminist food studies at the ASFS-AFHVS conference at Syracuse University @ASFS_org@afhvs_org
“In the work of South African scholar, Desiree Lewis, she rightly points out many of the blind spots of early scholarship in North American feminist food studies that assumes a global north perspective and calls for more transnational feminist food studies (2005). In Eating While Black, Forson expands an intersectional framework while centering race especially for Black women. By bringing transnational feminist food scholars into conversation with intersectional scholars of color in the global north, we can move past some of these overly simplistic analyses of women and food. This roundtable based on a forthcoming volume which seeks to center voices that have been marginalized in food studies, to include positionality as a valuable perspective and to advance discussions about decolonizing food studies both in terms of colonialism but also in terms of location through decentering whiteness and addressing settler colonialism, caste, heteronormativity and gender binaries.”
@B_Classic Congratulations on the @ASFS_org first book prize! I saw this just now, and right in time as I will be discussing your book (along with Kwate's book) with my graduate student this afternoon. What a great story, which deserves recognition!
