Most people don’t realize how unusual the UK’s doctor-training model is until they compare it internationally.
France, Germany, Australia, the Netherlands — all move doctors to independent practice years faster.
The UK isn’t the norm. It’s the outlier.
1000s of doctors want to train as GPs or psychiatrists but the Government refuses to fund enough posts.
10,677 applied to become psychiatrists; but only 489 posts were available.
20,995 applied to become GPs; but only 4276 posts.
Doctors left unemployed, patients left waiting.
I expect >90% of 2024 UK medical grads (aka current F2s) will be leaving the country/medicine next year. Unfortunate state of affairs is an understatement.
Will the government act? @wesstreeting@BMAResidents@TheBMA
Specialty training competition ratios for 2025 released. An awful day to be a doctor out of training or a medical student.
Frozen progression is a further nail in the coffin of a career in medicine in the UK.

Attending the BMA SRM for the 10-year plan that gov put out. Will provide major updates as relevant to F2s in here.
- UK grad prioritisation unlikely to happen for 25/26 cycle

@DHSCgovuk floated 2.8% uplift = real terms pay cut
2.8 was floated 3 months ago (!) and still no update or reassurance
We must stand up for ourselves or we are set for more pay erosion and moral injury

Where is our medical leadership?
What are they doing about this?
Or will they sit idly by twiddling thumbs and then criticise the tone of those who try and change something?

Today we announce our financial support to @AnaesUnited and the parents of Emily Chesterton in their legal case against @gmcuk on its failure to properly distinguish between doctors, PAs and AAs.
Our support will protect AU and the Chestertons from the risk of financial loss arising from the case and is in addition to our own ongoing legal challenge against the GMC.
We also seek assurances from @wesstreeting that the Government will not use public money to defend this case.

Female gender was removed from CHADS-VASc score in new ESC guidelines for management of AF.
Rationale : female gender is a risk modifier rather than risk factor for stroke.
Now we have a CHADS-VA score.
🚀 I am thrilled to the stars ✨ to share that our groundbreaking work on space omics and medical atlas (SOMA) led by the visionaries @mason_lab and @AfshinBeheshti and rest of the teams across the globe is featured on the cover of @Nature 🌌 Our #research unveils the effects of spaceflight on human and microbial biology, mapping them with unprecedented detail.
This marks a new frontier in aerospace medicine and space biology, thanks to the incredible efforts of our team. Notably people from my lab and team also participated in a number of publications in @SpringerNature@NaturePortfolio
Now that the bar is high at the @UMmalta@UMhealthscience we need to find ways and support to maintain it

I'm a PGY6 doctor and I can't land a plastics job. Extremely positive interview feedback but outcompeted due to 200+ applicants per post
If we're short on surgeons why am I having to fight so hard to do the job I love. Could I live my dream without the title?
Space-Omics take off🚀
A suite of papers at @NaturePortfolio explore the gap between molecular biology and health & performance traits of human spaceflight.

A collection of 44 new studies, largely based on a short-duration tourist trip in 2021, provides insight into the health effects of traveling to space. https://t.co/u7HDIcfGxt
I think the roll out of Physician Associates as facilitated by @gmcuk and @NHSE_WTE is unsafe - due to lack of defined scope, regulation or supervision
Previously backed by Colleges which are now changing stance due to voices being raised
In other news?
I have a new fan 🥰
The Space Omics and Medical Atlas (SOMA) package, published across Nature Portfolio journals, provides insights into how spaceflight affects human biology. It represents the largest compendium of data for aerospace medicine and space biology to date. https://t.co/CEGiszNJuw
Spaceflight is known to induce molecular, cellular, and physiological shifts in astronauts and poses various biomedical challenges to the human body. As more people venture into space, understanding the health risks associated with space exploration is key for the preparation
