Since it is St. Patrick's Day, here is a species of fish that “gets green” in the springtime during spawning, the Banded Darter (Etheostoma zonale). It is native to the Mississippi River basin and can be found in upland streams and rivers.

For the 8th day of Fishmas here's this Pirate Perch which was observed at Moro Creek by Aaron Brady and Tara Schnelting. Fun fact about Pirate Perch, they are the only species in Arkansas that have a jugular anus.

For the 6th day of Fishmas, this Sunburst Darter was observed in Dry Creek on behalf of Risa McCollough’s masters project studying the effects of stream barriers on fish movement and macroinvertebrate assemblages.

For the fourth day of Fishmas, Colton Morris, Blaine Wallace, Tyler Smith, and Jeffrey Phillips sampled this White Crappie for their Fisheries Techniques class.

For the third day of Fishmas we have Walleye sampled by Jimmy Hall and Tyler Smith with AGFC for their Walleye spawning project as a volunteer opportunity through ATU’s Aquaculture class.

For the second day of Fishmas here is a Longear Sunfish really showing how they get their name; This individual was observed in Spadra Creek by Tyler Smith during a Fisheries Techniques class.

Today marks the first day of the 12 days of Fishmas and we're starting off with a Redspot Darter that was observed by Aaron Brady in Morro Creek for Fisheries Graduate Student Tara Schnelting’s research.

Dr. Doug Barron’s Principles of Ecology class recently had a joint lab with Russellville High School students to sample fish and aquatic macroinvertebrates in the Illinois Bayou watershed.

Course Spotlight: Aquaculture, a course on the propagation of fish, shellfish, and aquatic plants, taught by faculty member Dr. Kyler Hecke. Recently, students in the class on a field trip to Andrew H. Hulsey State Fish Hatchery to learn about warmwater fish culture operations.
