Just finished this book.
I highly recommend it. Very good overview of the doctrine of natural law according to St Thomas and Suarez, and the obvious problems of Suarezian voluntarism.
It also has a very good synthesis of how the natural law is a participation in the eternal law in the second last chapter.
The mind is essentially passive or receptive in relation to the things it knows. We are meant to conform ourselves to reality rather than the other way round.
“Without an adequate notion of grace there cannot be an adequate notion of Catholicity. For the Catholic system is not merely a means to right living…The Church with its system exists primarily for the communication of grace to the souls of men”
Edward Leen, The Holy Ghost
“Even in the bosom of Christian circles those who show an unflinching and whole-hearted loyalty to the teaching of the Saviour meet with an opposition which hurts more than does the opposition of the enemies of the Christian name.”
Edward Leen, The Holy Ghost
“The recompense of a life truly Christian is not something fundamentally different from the Christian life itself, but that very life carried to the point of its final development.”
Edward Leen, The Holy Ghost and His Work in Souls
Summa Theologiae I II 113, 9
“The goodness of grace of one person is greater than the natural good of the whole universe.”
Aristotle, Politics viii
“To be seeking what is useful all the time is not at all fitting for the great-souled and the free.”
“Everyone takes pleasure in what he loves, and this happens because some are better or worse disposed according to reason.”
St Thomas, Comm. in Eth. X, 6
@PhilCatholic That’s true, but it can be difficult to find entirely satisfactory materials produced by others and, of course, nothing can replace the vox viva.
@PhilCatholic It would be great to have an edition of selections of such texts with notes and commentary for schools and colleges. I know of nothing of the kind. If I had more time, I would write one myself, though far from being an expert in Patristics.
@PhilCatholic But he was also alert to the danger of a too emphatically pagan diet, and suggested the study of the Fathers in Latin and Greek, if possible.
