On Thursday, @AmericanU walked away from the bargaining table with little notice and only this excuse: “We appear to be at significantly differing positions with regard to the wage/wage increase framework and do not believe that the parties are well positioned to make progress.”
Our position is that @AmericanU should pay living wages and create an equitable pay structure. Their position is to maintain the status quo. Our position solves problems and brings needed change. Their position rejects the need for change. #AUChangeCantWait
Their lawyer has suggested bringing in a mediator, and we welcome any opportunity to move the process forward. But a mediator does nothing to decrease our resolve to fight for everything that @AmericanU staff deserve, and it’s a fight we know we can win! #AUChallengeAccepted
Universities, both public & private, have been gradually moving away from their mission-driven models to market-driven models.

After nearly a month, we are back at the bargaining table today. After such a long gap, we fully expect @AmericanU administration to come prepared with serious proposals that address issues of fair pay and affordable healthcare and move the process forward. #AUChangeCantWait
Update: @AmericanU came with proposals, but they were not serious. In short, more of the status quo that we know is detrimental to staff and ultimately to the mission we support.
We want to solve problems and make #AUChangeCantWait more than an empty fundraising slogan, and it is difficult to put into words how frustrating it is to confront an administration that can only envision more of the same when we know that’s not working for anybody.
So we will keep organizing and pushing until @SylviaBurwell and @PeterStarrAU understand that real change @AmericanU is not only the best choice, it’s the only choice.
