Man, a 5k is just as painful as a marathon if done proper. Same with a Sprint and a 70.3. One is like being tapped on the forehead with a broom handle for hours. The other is like taking one blow from a bat.

The mistake most dads make with endurance sports:

Thinking it only counts if it's long.

So when the 70.3 doesn't fit the schedule, they stop racing altogether.

And they lose the edge. The aliveness that comes from having something to train for.

I just signed up for my first race since my daughter was born:

a local 5k.

Never actually raced one. It's going to hurt different than any Ironman I've done.

Short races. Local races. They still count.

The race doesn't have to be big to matter.
