FCCPC Warns Fuel Marketers Against Unfair Pricing as Petrol Averages ₦1,200 Nationwide, to Sanction Profiteers.
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has called on petroleum marketers to pass on cost efficiencies to consumers following recent fluctuations in fuel prices, while warning against any anti-competitive practices.
The Commission noted that the earlier spike in crude oil prices prompted local refiners and marketers to swiftly raise pump prices across the country. Petrol (PMS) climbed to between ₦1,350 and ₦1,500 per litre, while diesel sold for as high as ₦2,000 as hostilities intensified in the Gulf between April and May.
In contrast, common PMS averaged between ₦800 and ₦900 in February. As of today, the Commission observed that PMS is still being sold at an average of ₦1,200 nationwide, with some local refiners fixing gantry prices between ₦1,025 and ₦1,075.
While acknowledging that domestic fuel prices are influenced by multiple factors including refining costs, foreign exchange movements, logistics, financing, and distribution expenses the FCCPC expects competitive market dynamics to ensure that resulting cost efficiencies are quickly transmitted to consumers.
Mr. Bello, speaking on behalf of the Commission, stated:
“Market liberalisation does not diminish businesses’ obligations to compete fairly or consumers’ right to fair treatment. Where credible evidence indicates conduct that undermines competition, exploits consumers or otherwise contravenes the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act, the Commission will investigate and take appropriate enforcement action.”
He urged consumers to continue reporting suspected anti-competitive conduct, misleading pricing practices, and other forms of unfair market behaviour through the Commission’s established complaint channels.
MUSLIM MEDIA GROUP CALLS ON OIL MARKETERS TO REDUCE PETROL TO PRE-WAR PRICE OF ₦700 PER LITRE
A Non-Governmental Organization - The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria (MMWG) has called for a return to the pre-war time petrol price since there is a ceasefire agreement between America and Iran.
It calls on the Federal government to stop petroleum marketers from the continuous high cost of fuel products in Nigeria.
A statement by its National Coordinator Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi notes that the America - Israeli war with Iran that forced the prices of the petroleum products up had subsided following ceasefire agreement between Iran and America hence, there is no basis for petroleum marketers in Nigeria to keep the price of Premium Motor Spirit in particular (i.e. petrol) to above N1000 per litre.
The Group maintained that it amounts to economic sabotage against Nigerians for the marketers to continue to sell petrol above N1000, adding that petrol and diesel that have direct effect on common-man must have their prices forced down to below N1000.
The Media Group stated further that reports confirmed that in other parts of the world impacted by the war between America and Iran the people there had started enjoying reduced cost of fuel and wondered why such is yet to be witnessed in the country.
The Group therefore called on the Federal Government to intervain by stopping the petroleum marketers from prolonging the hardship of the people by ordering them to fall back to pre-war price of N700 per litre of petrol..
It also urge the Federal Competition Consumers Protection Commission (FCCPC) - under Federal Ministry, Trade, Industry and Investment to act on the matter without further delay.
The Group commended the Dangote Group for leading the petroleum refining reform and its efforts in ensuring good pricing for petroleum products in Nigeria to relieve Nigerians of economic hardship.
