Edge computing vs Cloud computing — what's the difference?

Give me 3 minutes and I'll tell you:

In 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴, computation and data storage happen in a centralized location, with cloud service providers in charge of managing the computer resources.

𝗘𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 is a distributed approach to data storage and task processing. By placing servers on the "edge" of the network or on the actual devices, it moves computing closer to where it is needed.

𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 over edge computing:

🔹 Resource pooling can be cost-effective.

🔹 Cloud service providers (CSPs) have a lot of resources available which makes scaling up or down simple.

🔹 CSPs manage all the infrastructure for you, whereas edge computing is often more complex and therefore more hands-on.

🔹 Cloud computing has been around for longer which means there are more providers and service models to choose from.

𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 over cloud computing:

🔸 Latency and bandwidth usage is reduced by processing data locally and not in a centralized location.

🔸 Real-time data processing can be achieved.

🔸 Removing the need to send sensitive data over the network boosts security.

🔸 A distributed system reduces the likelihood of a single node failing and taking down the entire system.

Edge computing and cloud computing are both great options, but which is best for you will depend on the requirements of your application.
