CONVICTED | Paige Laverty, 19, from #Illingworth, #Halifax HX2 – for cruelty to a young dog found in a collapsed state with visible bones and skin covered in sores.
Laverty turned a blind eye to the appalling suffering of her one-year-old Staffy cross, named Rocco. The puppy was found with multiple open wounds and urine burns where he had been “left to lie in his own mess for days” and had been starved to emaciation. Sadly, he was too unwell to be saved and was put to sleep by vets.
The court heard that RSPCA Animal Rescue Officers Emmeline Myall and Jade Barber went to Laverty’s address in August 2024 after a report of concern was made by a member of the public.
ARO Barber said: “His ribs, spine and hip bones were clearly prominent. His skull was clearly visible which showed significant muscle wastage.”
She said Rocco had discharge coming from his eyes and did not have the strength to lift his head. His fur was wet and there was a strong smell of ammonia.
They took him to a vet but in the consultation room, he “just groaned” as they tried to assess his condition.
ARO Barber said they also offered him a dog treat but said: “He didn’t even have the energy to open his mouth fully to take the treat so he quickly gave up trying.”
The vet’s statement said Rocco was suffering from muscle loss, urine scalding, dehydration, low temperature and an inability to move.
“The animal was visibly suffering so the decision was made to euthanise the animal,” said the vet.
In court, Laverty admitted causing Rocco unnecessary suffering by failing to provide nutrition and investigate his weight loss.
Her lawyer excused his client’s cruelty on the grounds that she was “young” and said the neglect was “not intentional”.

The starving, emaciated animals were discovered after the landlord realised the dogs had been left after the tenant, Rushford, had moved out.
RSPCA Inspector, Jo Story, went to the address in Derby Road in January 2024.
She said: “I could hear a noise. I slowly opened the door to see a small French bulldog puppy. She was extremely skinny with all her ribs showing.
“The room was full of faeces. She was desperate to get out and chewing at the door. There were scratch marks on the door as well.”
In another room - which was filled with faeces and clutter, including broken plates on the floor - was an underweight adult French bulldog.
Both dogs, mum and daughter named Cali and Crystal, were dehydrated and drank desperately when offered water.
The vet who examined the dogs after their rescue noted that they both ate ravenously when food was offered and said that Cali and Crystal were left to suffer because of their need for access to food and water being neglected.
Crystal, who weighed just 3.3kg and her mum, Cali, who weighed just 7.3 kg at the time of their rescue quickly gained weight with the right diet.
Ms Story added: “Crystal doubled her body weight in our care. Cali, added a third to her body weight in our care. They both put this weight back on easily with normal food and water, no other medication needed, which showed that it was literally lack of food and water that had reduced their body weight.”
In mitigation, Rushford said she had experienced difficulties after the recent bereavement of her grandmother and was also temporarily staying elsewhere.
The pets have been in RSPCA foster care since their rescue and are set to be rehomed.

Before Christmas I adopted this boy found as a stray in Barnsley and taken to cliff kennels.
He has been well trained and had a chip that was not registered.

Gazeley, a father-of-four who leads a chaotic lifestyle, pleaded guilty to three animal welfare offences following an RSPCA prosecution.
Officers from the animal charity were called to Gazeley’s home after concerns were raised about the welfare of his American bulldog crossbreed named Lucas. Tragically, rescuers found the dog dead behind the door of the abandoned property, which was filthy and full of rubbish.
The pet was emaciated with his head appearing sunken and all of his ribs were visible through his skin.
Dog faeces were smeared across floors in the fly-infested flat.
There was also a blanket soiled with blooded faeces.
Post-mortem examination found Lucas had experienced severe muscle wastage and serious atrophy of fat. His stomach contained only non-edible items, including plastic, plant material and hair. There were multiple areas of ulceration with bleeding.
Speaking about the case RSPCA Inspector Ben Jones said: “Lucas was simply left to starve alone in the empty property. It’s heartbreaking to think about what he experienced in the final weeks of his life.
“All animals deserve our kindness and respect and it’s saddening to know this wasn’t shown to Lucas before his death.”

RSPCA Inspector Gemma Cooper attended the couple’s home on Saturday 13 April 2024 after receiving a complaint about an underweight dog called Marshall. Although she was unable to gain access she could see a dog cage containing a lurcher and a collie type dog. She posted a card through the letterbox asking for the owner to make contact.
Simon Brown responded to the card and arrangements were made for Inspector Cooper to attend on Sunday 14 April 2024
Inspector Cooper said: “In the kitchen were two dog crates, one that I had seen the top of Marshall in the day before and a second one with a small, brindle crossbreed who I was told was Shadow.
“Inside the cage with Shadow was an extremely large saucepan full of pasta, meat and a grape that looked untouched.
“There was also a bowl of water but no bedding and Shadow was curled up at the back of the crate. I asked if I could feel him as I could not see his body weight due to his long fur and Rhiannon Richards opened the crate door and called him. Shadow did not react to the opening of the door or the call from Rhiannon Richards. He was extremely lethargic and depressed.”
When Shadow came out of the cage his back end and legs were covered in urine.
“As I held Shadow I could feel every bone in his body,” said Inspector Cooper.
“He was lifeless and made no attempt to engage with me.”
The couple told her that they had “rescued” Shadow from a neglectful owner the day before her visit. Neither Richards nor Brown were able to prove this, however.
Inspector Cooper also was introduced to a third dog Rocky who was of a reasonable weight.
Marshall and Shadow were transported to a vet who confirmed that they were suffering, leading to them being seized by police and passed into the RSPCA’s care.
In a witness statement, provided to the court, the vet said Marshall was in a “very emaciated body condition” and was given a body score of one out of nine. He also had pressure sores and alopecia all over his body. He also had dry skin around his face, ears and paws and flea dirt was present throughout his coat.
The vet said Marshall had been suffering for a minimum for two weeks, but likely longer.
Shadow was also presented to be in an emaciated condition with a body condition score of one and a half out of nine.
“He was very quiet and flat in the room and it was noted he walked with a hunched posture, preferring to curl up in the corner.” He also had flea dirt throughout his coat and he had moderate urine scald on his back and smelt quite strong of ammonia.
The vet believed he too had been suffering for a minimum for two weeks, but likely longer.
Following sentencing Inspector Cooper said: “Both Marshall and Shadow were clearly suffering, but thankfully following vet care and an appropriate diet they have transformed into two healthy dogs.”
Inspector Cooper added: “Shadow has been happily homed and we hope Marshall will soon also find his forever home.”
In mitigation it was heard that the couple had “financial issues”.
Sentencing |
Richards: 18-month community order with 20 days of ‘rehabilitation’ and 80 hours of unpaid work. She was ordered to pay £150 costs and a £114 victim surcharge.
Brown: 18 month community order with 15 days of ‘rehabilitation’ and 120 hours of unpaid work. He was ordered to pay £300 costs and a £114 victim surcharge.
Both are disqualified from keeping all animals for seven years.

Milo, a gentle rescue dog from South Africa, has been sentenced to 120 days of quarantine in this UK facility. Standard procedure for a simple microchip malfunction, despite being fully vaccinated and healthy.

No walks, no comfort, no adequate shelter. What would you do if this was your pet? Milo is not the only one.
