In this report โ one of the most ambitious reports ever published on the right to protest in Africa โ DefendDefenders studies #PeacefulProtests across the African continent. We examine the value of peaceful #protests as a tool for democratic participation, international & African human rights standards, the scope of the #RightToProtest, and trends across #Africa.
We also thoroughly assess the situation in 4โฃ focus countries, #Mozambique, #Senegal, #Tunisia, & #Uganda, with comparative analyses highlighting both patterns of violations & good practices.

This is how our journey began.
Our Executive Director, @Hassan_shire , envisioned a continent where human rights defenders (HRDs) are safe and better equipped to defend the rights of the marginalised.
Two decades later, that vision has grown. Weโve protected thousands of HRDs, equipped them with tools to thrive, and amplified their voices on regional and global platforms.
As we draw closer to marking 20 years, we honour every individual and organisation that has shaped this remarkable journey.

This afternoon our Executive Director @Hassan_shire was delighted to host H.E. Ambassador Mags Gaynor of @IrlEmbUganda to introduce our work and explore opportunities for continued collaboration. During her visit, the discussions highlighted national and regional human rights trends, and considered the structure and nature of our protection program and interventions in responding to human rights defenders at risk. We appreciate the continued support of the Government of Ireland towards enhancing protection of human rights defenders.
DefendDefenders supports Irish candidacy for the UN Human Rights Council membership for the 2027-2029 term.

Somalia has reached a milestone with Parliamentโs ratification led by @MFamily_HRD. This not only advances childrenโs rights but also signals commitment to building a legal framework that protects rights, enables advocacy and empowers HRDs across Somalia championing child rights
Our team joined a constructive meeting today in Dhusamareb, organized by @MoWHRDGalmudug, with Kirsten Young, Chief of @UNSOM Human Rights & Protection Group, and Civil Society partners. Together we are working to advance #HumanRights and protect #HRDs
Section 10 of Ugandaโs Data Protection and Privacy Act (2019) protects personal data, including sensitive health details and personally identifiable information (PII). Even an X-ray, if posted with someoneโs age, gender or the time it was taken can make them identifiable.
Our 5th Interactive Dialogue on Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) in Exile is currently underway.
This yearโs dialogue holds special significance as we commemorate 20 years of promoting, protecting, and amplifying the voices of HRDs forced into exile.
Despite facing significant challenges, exiled HRDs have remained steadfast in their advocacy; sharing critical information from their home countries and engaging regional and international human rights mechanisms to advance justice and protection.
We are honoured to be joined by exiled HRDs, legal experts, government representatives, and protection service providers as we reflect on our collective journey, assess ongoing challenges, and identify sustainable strategies to strengthen support for HRDs in exile.

This week, our Executive Director and Chairperson of @AfricaDefenders, @Hassan_shire , along with members of our team are in Somalia to support efforts to strengthen the capacity of @DefendersSomali.
As part of this mission, the Board of Defenders Coalition Somalia convened on 14 May 2025 for the first time since its establishment in 2015. A key outcome of the inaugural meeting was the formal constitution of the Boardโs leadership, with Chairperson Hassan Ali Gesey presiding.
Weโre pleased to report significant progress in developing a new governance frameworkโa vital step that expands the secretariatโs capacity and enhances protection mechanisms, now guided by clearly defined strategic objectives.
