A privilege to meet with Senator @SenTedCruz today. Somaliland’s story—of democracy, security, and economic growth—resonates strongly with U.S values. [1/2]

Dear #Somalilanders :
Public Awareness Note.
What #SOMALILAND government shouldn’t DO the months from now to the election day & What other bodies should be doing:
1 #Abuse of #Power : governments must refrain from abusing state resources or institutions for partisan gain. This includes using government funds, facilities, or personnel to promote a particular Kulmiye party or its candidate, because if it does, this will undermine the fairness of the electoral process.
2 #Misinformation: Government must at all cost avoid Disseminating false information or propaganda to manipulate public opinion because this is seen as antithetical to the principles of democracy. Somaliland government MUST uphold the truth and transparency in their communications with the electorate, avoiding deceptive tactics that undermine trust in democratic institutions.
3 #Suppression of Dissent: SOMALILAND government must Respect the principle of freedom of speech and assembly which is fundamental in democracy. Governments should not suppress dissenting voices or obstruct the activities of opposition parties and civil society groups. Political pluralism and open debate are essential for a healthy democracy.
#Safeguarding Against Catastrophic Decisions.
To prevent zealous politicians from making decisions with serious long-term repercussions in pursuit of electoral victory, several safeguards are essential:
a) #Informed Public:
A well-informed Somaliland citizens can play a vital role in holding politicians accountable and scrutinizing their decisions. Public Access to accurate information is also another key aspect, independent and functioning media scrutinising throughly every official announcement and informing the public in a timely manner , and public awareness campaigns which empowers citizens to make informed choices and demand accountability from their elected representatives. All will ensure Politicians won’t take steps that jeopardise or diminish the integrity and fairness of upcoming elections.
b) #Independent Institutions:
Strong and independent democratic institutions, including the judiciary, electoral commissions, and oversight bodies, Parliamentarians, Former Leaders, Religious leaders, Business leaders, Community elders, act as checks and balances on executive power. These institutions ensure that decisions are made in accordance with the rule of law and constitutional principles, mitigating the risk of arbitrary or reckless actions by incumbent government and politicians.
c) #Civil Society Oversight:
Civil society organizations, including Religious communities, Business Communities , advocacy organizations, and think tanks, play a crucial role in monitoring government actions and advocating for the public interest. Their scrutiny and activism help expose wrongdoing and prevent politicians from prioritizing short-term electoral gain over long-term national interests. This is the most crucial aspect that could serve as constant public interest safeguarding measure.
Role of Elected #Parliamentarians: During the run up to the election ( from now to November 2024).
Elected parliamentarians have a responsibility to prioritize national interests over narrow political agendas. They serve as representatives of the people and guardians of the public good, tasked with scrutinizing government policies and decisions to ensure they serve the common welfare. By upholding democratic values, fostering transparency, and promoting accountability within government institutions, parliamentarians contribute to the stability and legitimacy of the democratic process. It’s their sole responsibility to have a watchful eyes on politically motivated decisions made by the government such as announcements of agreements, announcements of war, announcements of unrealistic and unfunded major government development projects & basically anything that could manipulate or influence, or jeopardise the integrity of the upcoming elections.
In SOMALILAND;
Empty rhetoric can make politicians an overnight national or regional hero!
Where real and tangible deliveries of ( social facilities, infrastructure etc) attract little or no appreciation.
Art of manipulation & playing with citizens feelings & fear.
In normal world : Key performance index is measured set of deliveries against set of targets or promises.
Take away from this ; Talk loud, non stop & know what people want to hear!.
