Visitors who met with Speaker Nabih Berri reported him as saying that Prime Minister Nawaf Salam called him and said:

“He thanked me for calming the people and getting them off the streets, and he told me: ‘I am cornered.’ I replied: ‘Fine, then get out of this agreement.’”

Berri added:

“These people have become entangled in a major matter. If they think this agreement will pass through the constitutional institutions, then they do not know that they will be facing Nabih Berri and a large parliamentary bloc. In the past they confronted Najah Wakim and Zahir El Khatib; today they will be confronting me, along with a very large number of MPs.”

He also renewed his warning about the danger of internal strife, saying:

“Those who drafted this agreement want to ignite civil discord. I do not want that, and I am doing everything I can to prevent an explosion. Even Hezbollah is working to preserve internal calm, yet they continue pushing forward with an agreement that is worse than the May 17 Agreement… They want sedition.”

Berri further said:

“The greatest danger—one that could lead to catastrophe—would be any attempt to undermine the Lebanese Army or open discussion about dismissing its commander, General Rudolf Haykal. If they touch the Army or its commander, we will never remain silent.”

He also argued that this course of action:

“was originally designed to derail the path of understanding between the United States and Iran.”

He continued:

“I am also concerned about the Islamabad track. The region—and the Iranian track—may have entered a difficult phase that could last for some time. Today we are witnessing a climate of rivalry within the U.S. administration between Marco Rubio and J.D. Vance, and this competition may continue for a long time. I fear that the region will end up paying the price for both the internal American political struggle and the American-Israeli tensions.”
