🇺🇸 Texas is about to decide how an entire generation understands one of the world’s most divisive conflicts

Under the 2030 social studies standards, students would explicitly connect Israel’s 1948 establishment to the Jewish ancestral homeland, emphasize Judeo-Christian influences on American history and identify “radical Islam” when studying 9/11.

The bigger question is what happens when those choices are paired with less required attention to Palestinian displacement, competing historical claims and controversial actions by pre-1948 Zionist militias.

The facts teachers are required to emphasize, and the context they aren’t, can significantly affect how students interpret the conflict.

That’s why curriculum battles aren’t simply fights over whether individual statements are accurate.

They’re also fights over selection, emphasis and which historical perspectives students encounter before forming their own conclusions.

With Texas educating millions of students, those choices could influence how a generation understands the Middle East long after they leave the classroom.

The story of massacre of muslims of Hyderabad, 1948

September 17 is celebrated as “Hyderabad Liberation Day.” But liberation for one side became catastrophe for another.

After Operation Polo, Hyderabad’s Muslims faced widespread killings, looting, dispossession and terror. The Sunderlal Committee, appointed to investigate the violence, conservatively estimated 27,000–40,000 deaths and documented attacks on Muslims across the state.

Its findings implicated local Hindu groups, communal organisations and elements of the Indian Army. Nehru himself warned about the role of RSS and Arya Samaj elements in the violence.

Sardar Patel can be accused of personally ordering the massacres as he was Home Minister and a principal architect of Hyderabad’s invasion . He and his forces cannot escape the responsibility for what followed. Their complicity in enhancing the scale of the atrocities against Muslims had been widely discussed among the victims in their stories.

The convenient national narrative celebrates September 17 as liberation while pushing the victims into the footnotes.

Hyderabad’s history has another side: thousands of Muslims who paid the price for the political conquest of their homeland. Their story deserves to be remembered not erased to protect a nationalist myth.
