Today, the world marked  #WorldBambooDay, an annual celebration that underscores the environmental, economic, and cultural value of bamboo in societies globally.

In Kenya, the commemoration took place at the University of Kabianga in Kericho County, led by the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, Dr. Deborah Barasa. The event also served as the official launch of the National Bamboo Development Strategy and Action Plan (2025–2035).

In her remarks, Dr. Barasa emphasized that Kenya now has a clear roadmap for bamboo utilization. She noted that with bamboo recently gazetted as a cash crop, the country has established a strong legal foundation for its commercialization. The CS further highlighted that private sector investments have already established bamboo plantations, while community groups continue to expand cultivation.

Speaking at the event, KFS Board Chairman, Mr. Titus Korir, affirmed that the Service is advancing bamboo technology to strengthen its position as a commercial species. He added that several frameworks have been signed to support tree growing initiatives nationwide. He also announced that the Service is committed to recognizing and rewarding individuals, communities, and institutions actively engaged in tree growing through the forthcoming Africa Champion of Trees Awards.

The National Bamboo Development Strategy and Action Plan sets out eight strategic objectives, including the expansion of bamboo to 150,000 hectares across forests, riparian areas, and farms. This will establish a solid foundation for Kenya’s bamboo industry. Long considered a missing link in the forestry sector, bamboo is now positioned as a potential game changer creating jobs, boosting livelihoods, and contributing to the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

The event was graced by key dignitaries, including the Ministry’s Conservation Secretary George Tarus, Deputy CCF (Natural Forests) Beatrice Mbula, alongside members of the KEFRI Board and Management.
