Digging through old papers I found my GRE scores from 20 years ago. Good reminder to aspiring #PhD students (plus myself and other professors evaluating applications) that test scores are not everything (I certainly did not get into grad school based on mine!). #AcademicChatter
@methanoJen With dropping the GRE requirement, I think it’s important to ask: what other objective measure is being put in place as part of holistic admissions? For me, as an FLI undergrad who had to work, the GRE score made up for other problems on my app, even though the cost was painful
I learned from @AcademicGREtalk that there's a list of biology PhD programs that no longer require the GRE, including 🧠 neuroscience: https://t.co/i7u1PHkLXp

Organizations can enact change by coercive (e.g. NIH mandating data sharing) or mimetic (e.g. PhD program #GRExit after seeing other programs do the same) means. 6/8
"In recent years, many ... graduate programs have removed the #GRE requirement, with notable success. But implementing a truly holistic admissions process ... requires more than dropping standardized tests," writes @AnnaMapp in a new #ScienceEditorial. https://t.co/2CW6Y85gXx

Effective Fall 2022, we are pleased to announce that our MS Geology Program no longer requires GRE for admission!
This follows our previous elimination of GRE for our PhD Program in Earth and Energy Sciences.
We look forward to your applications to @ULGeosciences!
I applaud Seth for his efforts. I was in the minority dissenting from this opinion, arguing that while the GRE should not be required, it should be included as part of our holistic assessment to help students showcase their capacities.
Today, the University of Wisconsin-Madison Psychology Dept faculty voted to eliminate the GRE from the graduate admissions process. So glad that we will focus on more important qualities about individuals, and that applicants can devote their time + $ to more worthwhile endeavors
There have been past members of the Kozlowski group who have done stunningly well who had low GRE scores. GRE scores tell more about what resources you have had access to than your passion for chemistry and ability to conduct experiments.
@AliciaGrandey@PSUPsychology Yes, this is so important to recognize. Thinking about this drove decision in my dept to make the GRE optional (not required, but possible to submit). Very interested to keep learning about ways to improve the system in recognition of systematic bias and discrimination
Couldn't agree more! Students also have to pay additionally for the GRE or TOEFL test. Besides, if you get partially funded scholarship then students have the burden of finding graduate assistantship to cover health insurance/accomdation/semester miscellaneous.
(It shouldn't) but it still blows my mind that you have to pay $27 to send your GRE scores to grad schools after coughing up a ridiculous amount for the test itself.
I’m saying this as as someone who went through the application process & is a PhD student. Getting access to journals & papers outside of an institution is EXPENSIVE. Taking the GRE, application fees, it all adds up. I’m just… what?!
