Academic and cynical poet who fantasises daily about a shelf-stacking job before remembering my bills and fleeting positive moments with students and research
Paper rejected today. Been working on it on and off for 4 years. 2 lengthy reviews with many ultimately helpful comments but lots of work ahead of me to resubmit somewhere else. Any words of advice or comfort? #AcademicChatter#AcademicTwitter
UK parents in academia. What do you do about work when your child is sent home from nursery? Take unpaid parental leave? Work flexibly? Reschedule teaching or meetings? I'm new to this #momademia#AcademicTwitter
Have any fellow lecturers in the UK been successful in securing flexible working whereby they do 4 long days rather than 5? To help with childcare or for any other reason. #AcademicChatter#AcademicTwitter
Regretting submitting an article I've been working on for years to a top tier journal as now, to my surprise, it is under review (rather than desk rejected), I expect an eventual rejection and have to start the process all over again #AcademicTwitter#AcademicChatter
How many bids or how much money are academics expected to bid for each year? Surely this is something I should know. My institution is very hazy on this but getting it wrong seems to come back to bite you! #AcademicTwitter
Help! #academictwitter write up 1 paper or 2? 🤔 n=800. 9 hypotheses supported. Redeveloped a scale with new population = interesting factor analysis. Also substantial qualitative(300k words) analysis with novel contribution. Struggle with word count or risk salami slicing?
@FromPhDtoLife Did my food shopping in the week when shops were quiet and I could walk there. Exercise, nature, fresh air and quiet shops to clear my head
How do I/can I get out of a textbook contract with a big publisher. I've already extended my deadline twice and written F all. I'm lacking time and motivation and was in a bad place when I secured the contract. Self-publishing also appeals more & more. #AcademicTwitter
@emilykmay This is why I'm grateful to be working from home this semester. I can work 8-4 and then take our son while my wife preps dinner or prep dinner while wife has our son. I'm not sure I could manage the multi-tasking
Has anyone successfully dropped to a 4 day contract (0.8FTE) in academia? I feel like my workload would be the same for just less time and money. #AcademicChatter#AcademicTwitter#academicmums
@equreshihurst I completely agree. Building strong connections, roots and a safe, stable place for a family should not be frowned upon but appears to be seen as stale or lacking in ambition- terrible
Examined a PhD yesterday. Some obvious DON'Ts based on that viva:
1. Say 'we' rather than 'I'
2. Say "I thought it would be interesting" when asked to justify research decisions
3. Defend every single point, especially where the defence is poor

I'm publishing a short comical collection of poems about staff struggles in academia in 2023. Would you be more interested if it was...
