In the paper, @Tyfic_Gh@abu_remaileh et al. characterize lysosomal phospholipid catabolism, a pathway crucial in several biological processes, and reveal a pathological role for the Batten disease storage metabolites glycerophosphodiesters (GPDs) in the lysosome. They demonstrate that GPDs bind and inhibit key lysosomal phospholipases, leading to the accumulation of lysophospholipids, intermediates in phospholipid degradation known for their toxicity.
🍳Our illustration depicts two chefs who are effective while the other two are struggling, representing highly efficient phospholipases under healthy states whose rate-determining step is potently inhibited in Batten disease.
