@CACEnotes I've just finished reading @timfarron 's book 'A Better Ambition ' in which he makes similar points. It's possible that those of us on the centre left need to be a bit more like JK and Tim
Watching the England v DRC game on RTE is so much better than whatever one sided nonsense is going on with the BBC broadcast. I imagine Mr. Shearer thought that was a penalty but would hold the opposite view if it was Wissa falling over in the box.
New: 20 per cent of the Parliamentary Labour Party (81 MPs) have signed an amendment to the Representation of the People Bill calling for a national commission on electoral reform. Latest signers include Polly Billington, Justin Madders and Zubir Ahmed.
140 MPs cross-party have now signed chair of the APPG for Fair Elections, Alex Sobel's amendment.
(Should be noted that 81 MPs is the nomination threshold needed for Labour MPs to get on the leadership ballot!)
@Battlemuch4WW The open stands are one of the problems with TB. We used to like the old West Wing and Parr stands with the covered lower tier. I accept they had to be replaced but they ought to have been replaced by better.
@RoworthJack@Battlemuch4WW We don't (fortunately) have a presidential system. No PM has a 'personal mandate.' What do you think ought to happen if there is a hung parliament and two or more parties agree to form a gvt?
@Battlemuch4WW Certainly there is no need for a GE. But, unless AB repairs our politics and our relationship with the EU then I doubt things will be much better.
@Battlemuch4WW At the risk of looking a right wazzock in 2029, Reform cannot win a majority on its own. Look at the political geography and try and find 326 winnable seats for them. Can't be done. Plus, their general incompetence in LG will be clear to see by the next election. 1/2
@timfarron Do vote it down at Second Reading. We need a proper Commission on end of life care. If choice is one of the AD enthusiasts motives then ensure good quality palliative care is available for everyone so the choice is a real one.
@rwjdingwall@LucyGoBag The death of Roy Hattersley reminded me of politics as competing ideas. Now we seem to have politics as response to tabloid headlines.
@Battlemuch4WW Hi Steve,
Any chance of one of your excellent councillor blog posts on what happens after the gvt announces the new local gvt boundaries? Issues like ward boundaries, elections, how any shadow authority would work?
Absolutely dismayed that the Assisted Dying Bill is being re-introduced. Not a single one of our major medical or professional bodies support it. A deeply flawed and dangerous bill that poses a real risk to the most vulnerable in our society.
@MForstater Do you think that the 'Bananarama Defence ' might itself be discriminatory? A highly educated middle class person could express a dissenting view in an 'acceptable' way whereas a less educated working class person, or one who has limited English skills, might struggle.
