The Gadaboursis, a tribe with unclear origins: their apical ancestor was allegedly a bastard, an illegitimate child born from an adulterous relationship between his mother and an unknown man who came from elsewhere.

- “Gadabuursi, a term which popular etymologies derive from gudo, meaning ‘inside,’ and biirsanayya, meaning ‘to accumulate,’ and which would therefore mean ‘those who multiply from within.’ According to certain traditions widespread among neighboring clans, the mother of the Gadabuursi ancestors had been unable to name the father of the children she had given birth to. While the council of elders had proposed putting her to death to punish her misconduct, some members of the assembly had intervened on her behalf, saying: ‘What does it matter, since in this way we multiply.’

From Si’iid Da’uud Gadabuursi emerged three primary lineages: the Reer ‘Iise and the Habar Yuusuf (both grouped under the name Habar ‘Afan), as well as the Samaroon, descended from an eponymous ancestor whom legend sometimes portrays as an Arab immigrant who received the protection of Dir or, according to other versions, of the Isaaq Habar Awal.

Samaroon, later joined by three smaller clans (hence their name soo raa’), namely the Xeebjire, Jibra’iin and Ali Ganuun, gave rise to Makadoor or Makaduur, from whom descend two important lineages: the Maxaad ‘Ase and the larger Makahiil lineage (including the Bah Reer Xaamud, Bah Makahiil, Bah Jibra’iin, Bah Nadidoor, Bah Habar Gobo, Bah Mussafiin, Bah Madigaan, Bah ‘Aylo, etc.).

Along with the ‘Iisa, the Gadabuursi are the only major Dir clan to have remained in their region of origin. They occupy a territory situated between that of the ‘Iisa and the Isaaq, encompassing the localities of Borama, the clan’s principal town, the Haraawa Valley, ‘Aw Barre (Teferi Ber in Amharic), and Qabri Bahar, extending considerably into Ethiopian territory,” writes French diplomat Christian Bader in his book Brève histoire des clans Somali (1999, p. 75).

- The famous English explorer Richard Burton describes the Gadaboursi as a “bastard and ignoble race” in his book First Footsteps in East Africa: “The Gudabirsi, or Gudabursi, derive themselves from Dir and Aydur, thus claiming affinity with the Isa; others declare their tribe to be an offshoot from the Bahgoba clan of the Habr Awal, originally settled near Jabal Almis, and Bulhar, on the sea-shore. The Somal unhesitatingly stigmatize them as a bastard and ignoble race: a noted genealogist once informed me, that they were little better than Midgans or serviles. Their ancestors' mother, it is said, could not name the father of her child: some proposed to slay it, others advocated its preservation, saying, ‘Perhaps we shall increase by it.’ Hence the name of the tribe. The Gudabirsi are such inveterate liars that I could mountains; fix them no number between 3,000 and 10,000. They own the rough and rolling ground diversified with thorny hill and grassy vale, above the first or seaward range of mountains.” (p. 167).

- The English encyclopedia The Imperial Gazetteer, published in London, England, corroborates Richard Burton’s account in a publication dated 1850: “Gudabirsi, or Gudabursi, a bedouin tribe, East Africa, bounding on the North with the Eesa, with whom they claim affinity, though the other Somaul refuse to acknowledge the relationship, and unhesitatingly stigmatize them as a bastard and ignoble race.” (p. 163).

Zeila, 1936: Wilwilé, the warrior dance of the Issas.

This photograph, taken by British Lieutenant Colonel E.H.M. Clifford, shows Somali/Issa warriors performing the famous Wilwilé, a symbol of bravery, courage, and pride.

According to the account of Prince Henri d’Orléans, the warriors advanced in formation, spears in hand, before forming a circle and performing a mock knife fight to the rhythm of their war chants.

Unusual livestock keeping at Biyo Qaboobe: when Somalis/Issas domesticated ostriches.

Photograph taken on June 30, 1888, by the Italian explorer and geographer Luigi Robecchi Bricchetti, during his journey from Zeila to Harar, accompanied by a caravan of Somali/Issa camel drivers.

At the end of the 19th century, Biyo Qaboobe, meaning “fresh water” in Somali, was described as a true oasis in the middle of the desert: a strategic stopping point where caravans, travelers, and Somali nomads crossed paths and came to water their livestock.

The Russian diplomat Piotr Vlasov described it as a lush oasis, rich in wildlife and vegetation, located at the crossroads of routes leading to Harar.

This photograph also documents a practice that may seem surprising today: the domestication of ostriches by Somalis/Issas.

Djibouti Police Commander Responsible of Targeting Gadabuursi

Lieutenant Colonel Salah Mohamed Hersi, commander of Hodan Police Station,is the official that overseeing the detention of Djiboutian citizens from the Gadabuursi community following recent clashes in Awdal, Somaliland.

Colonel Salah, belong to the Mamaasan Badarxaan family and to have connections to the ruling establishment and President Ismail Omar Guelleh, reportedly lost relatives in the recent clashes between Issa and Gadabuursi communities in Somaliland.

Reports that the Djiboutian citizens were detained because of their Gadabuursi background and their family connections to relatives affected by the clashes.
