When the Somali regime, led by Siad Barre, committed a massacre against the people of Somaliland, the world was silent. But Israel was not silent.
In 1990, Israelโs then-ambassador to the UN, Yohanan Bein, sent a letter to the UN Security Council warning about the massacre committed by Somalia in the city of Hargeisa. Even when it was inconvenient and diplomatically costly, Israel chose what was right.
That is what moral leadership looks like.
Thanks to @JMeservey & @HudsonInstitute for hosting key #USA๐บ๐ฒ govโt & private sector stakeholders this morning for a serious roundtable discussion on the moral & strategic case for #Somaliland recognition with Sir @GavinWilliamson, former #UK๐ฌ๐ง defense & education secretary.
Having worked on U.S. CT policies in Somalia, it was interesting to meet Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi on the sideline of the @WorldGovSummit.ย We discussed Israel's recent recognition and the potential for President Trump to do the same in the years ahead.
SL has transitioned from an aid-driven mindset toward one of strategic investment and cooperation. Offering opportunities across all economic sectors, these forums and engagements are pivotal to advancing Somalilandโs quest for international recognition and foreign investment.
We had a very productive day in Dubai, engaging with investors and meeting senior political leaders on key opportunities for cooperation.

The President of the Republic of Somaliland, speaking at #Davos2026, shared with the international media that Somaliland is open for business. He highlighted the Somaliland Economic Corridor, Berbera Port, the Berbera Economic Zone, and the countryโs future development plans.
The Berbera Economic Zone (BEZ) is strategically positioned to attract U.S. and transnational companies seeking reliable entry points into the Horn of Africa and the wider Red Sea corridor. For global firms in logistics, energy, technology, manufacturing, and trade services โ including companies such as Amazon, UPS, FedEx, Microsoft, Google, Chevron, ExxonMobil, Halliburton, and other international operators โ Berbera offers what investors prioritize most: proximity to a major growth market, secure maritime access, and a stable operating environment.
Located on one of the worldโs busiest shipping lanes and providing the most direct sovereign maritime corridor to Ethiopiaโs 120-million-person market, BEZ also serves as a gateway to regional and continental markets through COMESA (over 560 million people) and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), representing a combined market of more than 1.4 billion people.
BEZ has the structural characteristics that multinational companies typically seek in Africa: a deep-water port, an anchor global operator (DP World), low congestion, strong security, and the ability to operate within a dedicated special economic zone framework.
For global companies, BEZ reduces risk, lowers logistics costs, and enables regional scale. For Somaliland, BEZ converts strategic geography into economic power, positioning the country as a logistics, energy, and digital gateway for East Africa, COMESA, and the Red Sea corridor. In practical terms, Berbera is not just an infrastructure project โ it is Somalilandโs primary platform for attracting international investment and integrating into global value chains.
Indeed, the president is engaging in bilateral discussions with key figures in Davos. The momentum for Somaliland's recognition is building stronger than ever before.
Last night in Davos, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum, i met with the President of the State of Israel, @Isaac_Herzog at a high-level dinner. Our discussions focused on strengthening and advancing bilateral relations between the Republic of Somaliland and the State of Israel.
I also met @EricTrump , an influential global figure and son of the President of the United States, as well as other senior global political figures and international leaders.
The back and forth on whether Somaliland has legitimacy is empty rhetoric, Reality is that Somaliland is a functioning, responsible, capable nation while Somalia is an international beggar incapable of exercising even the minimal functions of governance. True or not?
The Government of the Republic of Somaliland categorically rejects Somaliaโs false claims over Berbera.
Somalia has no jurisdiction, authority, or standing over Somaliland territory or agreements. All SomalilandโUAE agreements remain lawful and binding.
International recognition has been the focus of Somaliland's foreign policy for 35 years. Hargeisa has built a more functional state than some recognized countries.
The US should follow Israel's lead and recognize Somaliland; it is simply recognizing reality, @JMeservey argues.

In 2005, Erdogan himself paid an official visit to Israel to repair tiesโlaying the foundation for the very economic partnership Turkey continues to benefit from today. @HakanFidan Diplomacy wasnโt called โshameโ then; it only becomes so when it no longer serves Ankaraโs narrative. Selective outrage is not principleโitโs opportunism.
And one thing remains certain: the will of the people of the Republic of Somaliland will prevail. It is unstoppable and you will witness!
The President of the Republic of Somaliland, H.E Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi received Israelโs Foreign Minister @gidonsaar in Hargeisa, following Israelโs official recognition of Somaliland on 26 June 2026โa milestone in bilateral diplomatic relations.
This is a historic visit, & you have broken more than three decades of diplomatic isolation. You are paving the way for widespread regional & global recognition of Somaliland's unique right to self-determination, in line with the UN &the African Charter on Human & Peoples' Rights
This was an anticipated historic visit. The failed state of Somalia arguing against the recognition of Israel was a prank and not real. Tell them that it is real, not fake.
A high-level delegation led by the Israeli Foreign Minister @gidonsaar has arrived in Hargeisa. Senior officials of the Republic of Somaliland received them at the airport.
