There is no shortage of Nigerian firsts. There is a shortage of Nigerian storytelling infrastructure that treats them as firsts.

Fix the second gap and the first list becomes obvious the next time somebody in a bar tells you 'nothing works in Nigeria.'

I did an ideation session with Claude a couple of months ago. A lot of what it suggested was crap; it was recursive, and I picked holes in it until it gave up. I went to Gemini; it brought up suggestions I hadn't even considered, but it didn't go further as it was limited by training data.

It then occurred to me that AI is good for seeing whether others have had similar thought processes in the past and for understanding the boundaries of previous thinking before pushing further.

AI is excellent for research before creative output. Anyone who thinks it creates new things is either severely limited in their experience or very lazy. The human mind is still more powerful than the best AI. The way we make associations over time and space to create new concepts and ideas is unparalleled.

AI is a powerful helper, no doubt, but we must not give up human agency and creativity to laziness and expedience.

Yoruba culture teaches respect for elders.

It does not require renting your brain to them.

An older person can carry experience you do not have. They can also carry assumptions built for a world that no longer exists.

Wisdom is knowing how to receive the lesson without swallowing every conclusion.

Ask questions respectfully. Separate principle from preference. “Work hard” may be timeless. “This is the only respectable career” may be somebody's fear wearing traditional clothes.

You can honour the person and still examine the advice.

You can say “Ẹ ṣé” and continue thinking.

Age deserves courtesy. Evidence deserves authority.

The best elders do not feel threatened when younger people ask why. They understand that a legacy is not a cage. It is a foundation from which the next generation should see farther.

Respect is not silence.

Sometimes respect is taking advice seriously enough to test it before building your life on top of it.
