I finally did it. After thirty-five years of building schools, I sat down and wrote the whole story. It's called Radical Optimist, and it's out today. You can read it here:

I called it that because the thread running through my life has been a stubborn belief in what kids can do, usually right after someone told me it was impossible.
– There's a chapter about an inner-city classroom in Anchorage, where the eighth-grade girls everyone had written off gained four years of critical thinking in a single semester.
– There's the school we built in portable buildings up in the New Mexico mountains that ended up ranked 36th in the country, ahead of the magnet schools and the wealthy suburbs.
– And there's how @socraticexp actually started, in the fall of 2020, with three students and a credit card.
It's the most honest thing I've written. I love learning, and I hate school, and this is the long version of why.
If you've been reading my X this year, this is all of it in one place.

Ik vraag mij af, met al deze destructie gaande,
Hoe ziet creatie eruit?
In Pandora’s box richting biedt?
Wat zou ze gevoeld hebben?
Die moed, die dapperheid,
Om desondanks de omgeving
To shine bright,
As a drop from the oceans
Contains the whole of the oceans,
As the light from a star
Contains the whole universe.
And yet we don't panic when we look to the sky,
Look up and marvel at the stars,
And let that vast nothingness
Just be as it is,
Since in silence
That nameless thing
Can come into being.
Am I strong enough?
On this day, Saturday,
I could be anywhere.
However, here I am.
Fearful. Doubting.
Frozen.
What needs to happen to explode
in joy, in creating?
Is this what love is? Love hurts.
Is this the nail through the hand?
The absurd?
The unconditional Love?
That although you might not be aware,
I AM.
Can we change the meaning of,
Being.
Human.
Thank you Nip for Being.
So what does it mean to be human?
Can we change the meaning?
Imagine.
What if the word ‘Mother’ meant,
Nothing.
What if the word ‘Brother’ meant the same thing as,
Lulukaa.
Random.
Chosen sounds to what you react to.
So what does it mean? What is it like?
To be you?
The daily worries, the challenges, the dreams, hopes and nightmares…
Your pain, in my pain.
The pain of the world.
Is My Pain.
Where there is an ego,
there is pain, fear and being loved,
Hatred & Violence.
Have you seen it?
Is this what it means to be human?
Can it be any other way?
Who is there to blame?
Other humans?
You mean the same humans as you and me?
Our selves, no self.
The wanting to write
And the expression is there.
Yet when I think of the audiance
the value, I feel like a dancing Monkey.
Learning to feel the difference between
Performance, and transmission.
Maybe, it's like what Godin says...
This moment what he referes to...
You ship the work!
Or @SPressfield , with his saying:
Just do the work!
And the Muse might come...
If this is a simulation, what would be your distactions to live the life that you feel that you deserve. A life of harmony and blessings?
Can you recognize the distractions? If you see it, what is holding you back?
@levelsio This difference is something I believe we (outgroup) will mostly be blind to. The reason is, due to our cultural lens we perceive other cultures always throught our (unaware) lens. And in my experience, a way to navigate different cultures is to assume that one is blind.
Shenzhen used to be a poor fishing village under communist rule.
Then China copied the free-market playbook of nearby Hong Kong, just across the water.
Twenty years later, wages jumped from $1,000 to $6,000 a year.
No NGO, no aid program, no “do-good” initiative has ever done that.
Inspired by @temsbaby - Me & u; "I want to show you my world, as it is our world, yet for that to happen, I need you to see me, receive as I am. Broken, afraid, yet on the continous edge of outthere. Together we bring it here, offer it to the flames of creation. Me & U.
