December 13 marks the feast day of Saint Lucia 🙏
A 4th-century virgin martyr during the Diocletianic Persecution, Saint Lucia is remembered for secretly bringing food and aid to Christians hiding in the Roman catacombs. According to tradition, she wore a crown of lit candles on her head to light the way, keeping her hands free to carry as much food as possible. Because her feast day falls near the darkest time of the year, it became known as a powerful festival of light.
Saint Lucia is especially revered in Syracuse, Sicily, her birthplace, where she is honored with large annual processions and deep devotion. She is also widely celebrated in northern Italy, particularly in Lombardy and Veneto, where long-standing traditions associate her with light, protection, and, in some families, the bringing of gifts to children. Her name comes from lux, meaning light, which is why she has long symbolized hope and illumination in times of darkness.
She is also the patron saint of the blind and those with eye diseases. From the 14th century onward, she is often depicted holding eyes on a plate, an image that became standard during the Renaissance and remains one of her most recognizable symbols today 👀
