@ProfJRoberts@AerospaceJohn In a 1930s-style universe where people are having dozens of kids and living to 75, I think that's fine, but if we have to start making tough choices I think cutting high-end benefits (which frankly includes my wife and I) makes sense.
That is true. Most people don't realize that they take Medicare payments out of social security for the retirees. The more income you have, the more the government takes out to support Medicare for the retiree.
@SeanTrende@AerospaceJohn Everything is means tested. Most wealthy retirees donโt get much social security as it goes to pay Medicare. I donโt think my parents get more than half the actual calculated payments.
The 20% cut would be across the board. That wouldn't hurt the people who have saved all their lives and are now getting what they paid into. It would hurt the people who you want to help - the poor.
@AerospaceJohn No one has a contract right to any specific Social Security benefit. Under current law, there will be around a 20 percent cut.
This is the law Boomer passed.
You and I think differently. Obviously, you're a socialist who wants to distribute the wealth to people who already get government benefits because that make you feel more superior. I believe in freedom and individualism to make your own decisions in life.
Except I don't "deserve" to receive whatever portion of my federal income tax payment is used to pay for need-based welfare programs, at least until I become eligible. Social Security should be the same way: taxpayers who earn enough and save with IRAs, 401ks, etc should forthrightly expect that way *they* pay into Social Security goes to poor retirees, instead of back in their own pocket once their retired.
I'm fine with that. But you can't penalize people who have paid into the system. If you've scrimped and saved all your live, you deserve to get what you paid in. Give them all the money they paid in and then don't give them a SS check.
@AerospaceJohn Social Security was conceived as a program to keep retired from being impoverished in their senescence. NOT subsidizing already-rich people.
Elon Musk says that "the useful humanoid robot opportunity is the single biggest opportunity ever."
"I think the ratio of humanoid robots to humans is going to be at least two to one, maybe three to one, because everyone will want one."
How about if you don't attack the hornets' nest, it will grow and build another hornets' nest and be more difficult to get rid of. Is this another "colorful" metaphor?
