The hate train will continue until @AmazonMGMStudio rescinds their stupidity or releases the Stargate rights for fans to save the series.
RELEASE THE RIGHTS OR RELEASE A GOOD STARGATE
Read my next book. Writing now; should be ready for @AetherCzar's next Based Book Sale.
No history or philosophy or any of that nonsense (ducking flying objects thrown at my head).
Observations re: how the world REALLY works. Pulling back the curtain. Don't be "comfort-livestock".
Extensive lessons in toughness (mental & physical) training.
I sense the g*-r* communism coming to an end. They'll probably re-seize our government but losing control of economy & narrative. Up to now they've maintained control thru long-game discipline implementing change slowly enough that we habituate to it. But now they're rushing with less than 4 years left & they've lost control of primary drivers of change anyway. They can still make the rules but resentment building up fast.
Who is most prepared for chaos, mentally, physically, situationally, wins.
Alexander Graham Bell was ludicrously wealthy. In 1880, the French government awarded him the Volta Prize, which is essentially worth a million dollars today. This kind of stuff happened to him all the time and seemingly at a constant pace. Some say that Bell only received the patent because he bribed the clerk to favor his application over Elisha Gray's application.
It's Day 2 and we demand @AmazonMGMStudio to either...
1) Let the Stargate creators make a new show
2) Release the rights so fans can do it
And no, Hammond won't take your silence as an answer
Amazon cancelled the new Stargate show.
The rumor is that the show writer, Martin Gero, would not budge on compromising lore or elements within the show for a "wider modern audience" as they did with Rings of Power for LoTR lore.
Martin Gero wanted to create a show that maintained continuity in the story and lore of the old shows, including the mythology and tech, while respecting the 17 seasons of history.
Amazon instead wanted something new for the "modern audience" that's more accessible, reimagined, with more modern casual sensibilities.
Because the showrunners wanted to maintain integrity rather than turn Stargate into another "modern audience slop" like Rings of Power, Amazon leadership canceled it. The franchise heavyweight, like Joseph Mallozzi, was very excited for the fresh stories Gero worked on. Amazon says they are still open to Stargate, just not "this" version... yes they wanted to Rings of Powerify Stargate.
We really can't hate these people enough.
Thrilled to announce that Red State Earth ( Lonesome Dove meets Lucifer's Hammer meets The Road Warrior meets Neuromancer ) is under contract with @ark_press !
Ark will be bringing the complete three book Red State series to shelves over the next 1-2 years
This is sad news and highlights why the likes of Amazon and co shouldn't be allowed to snap up the rights for ips unless they commit to utilising and creating something with them.
Notes on 100+ Recent Technical Interviews
I interview a ton of engineers. Recruiting is the single most important technical CEO activity. Here are a bunch of impressions
1. There is a severe ZIRP engineering overhang that is currently washing out. They're getting laid off, managed out, etc. after having been massively overhired around 2020-2022. This is worst for Tier-2 big tech (think PayPal, Bill, etc.) but also FAANGs. These are overwhelmingly bad engineers.
2. This flood of unqualified but good-on-paper candidates makes this the hardest SF hiring market I have ever seen, due to the amount of nominally strong-looking candidates that you need to grind through.
3. I am highly skeptical of "AI as a cause for engineering layoffs". I think this is a large-scale polite fiction -- the companies don't want to admit they overhired, the engineers don't want to admit they are bad at their jobs. Everyone's blaming AI when it's really just the market rectifying itself.
4. Many of these engineers appear never to have had a real engineering function at their corporations. They're sitting in meetings, "making decisions about technology" but are unable to write software. I leave many interviews baffled by what exactly they were doing for so many years, let alone what their manager was doing.
5. I have interviewed some engineers from FAANG companies so shockingly nontechnical that I am forced to conclude that there is either (1) a lot of resume fraud going on or (2) that there are kickback grifts within those organizations -- people hiring their cousins and splitting the pay, that kind of thing. I have no other explanation.
6. There's a fun side-effect where after interviewing 20+ people from certain small but public companies, I actually feel like I am gaining a short sellers' advantage: there are financial technology companies out there that, knowing what I now know, I would never deposit a single dollar into.
8. Based on this "exhaust" data, and extrapolating a little bit, maybe aggressively so: I think folks like @pmarca are basically right when they say that ~every tech company is overstaffed by a factor of 2-4x. Whatever the reason -- staffing ahead of need, monopolizing certain engineer types (Google-style), headcount-driven promotion incentives, the reality is that a lot of these companies are not being run for the shareholders. The aggregate SBC expense is insane, and I expect this is going to get rectified eventually.
I'm sure that AI will play a role in rectifying this -- but I fear that people are going to blame AI for taking people's jobs when the reality is that the jobs were already long-gone, possibly always useless, but the highly-paid butts-in-seats remained. People will be mad at AI for taking away their lucrative sinecures. Maybe that's the same effect from a public policy perspective, but it feels different morally.
Sadly, it's true. Amazon has elected not to move forward with the new Stargate series.
There's not much I can add beyond confirming what's happened. But I will say this...
Creator Martin Gero developed a new Stargate series over two years, ultimately crafting a show that offered a fresh jumping-on point for new viewers while deeply respecting existing canon. It was a series that avoided the pitfalls of several modern remakes and reboots by fully embracing the core of its predecessors: action, adventure, exploration, wonder, heart, humor, and found family. And based on that creative vision, the new Stargate series was greenlit in November of 2025.
As of today, officially, that original vision is no more. We'll never get the opportunity to introduce you to that world and those characters - or reintroduce you to, and check in with, some familiar faces from the past.
My heart breaks. For the incredibly talented writers who worked tirelessly to bring this show to life. For Martin who maintained an unwavering positive outlook throughout despite the challenges, and who always strove to make a show that would honor the fans while welcoming a new audiences. And for the long-suffering Stargate fandom who waited so long and came so close to getting a show they truly would have loved.
