Ebola in DRC remains extremely serious and continues to spread.
When the outbreak was declared on 15 May, it affected 1 province and 2 health zones. As of 1 September, it has reached 6 provinces and 60 health zones, across an area of approximately 240,000 km², comparable to the size of the United Kingdom and nearly five times the size of Switzerland.
We have now recorded 6,206 confirmed cases and 3,009 deaths.
Despite the considerable efforts of the Government and partners, we are not yet where we need to be.
This outbreak remains Africa CDC’s highest priority. We are working closely with WHO and other partners to support the Government of the DRC and strengthen every aspect of the response. We will not relent until this outbreak is brought under control.

As you gather for your Annual General Meeting @official_scoka, I extend my warmest congratulations to all young scientists across 🇰🇪 . You represent not only the future of our nation’s scientific enterprise but also the bridge between today’s discoveries and tomorrow’s solutions. I encourage you to embrace mentorship as both a privilege and a responsibility. Every accomplished scientist was once guided by a mentor, and every breakthrough is built upon the knowledge passed from one generation to the next. As President H.E. Dr. William Ruto @WilliamsRuto has often emphasized, “Our greatest resource is our people, especially our young people.” By investing in the next generation of scientists through mentorship, collaboration and ethical leadership, you will strengthen Kenya’s innovation ecosystem, accelerate research for impact, and help build a globally competitive, knowledge-driven economy. As Sir Isaac Newton aptly observed, “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” May you become those giants upon whose shoulders future generations of Kenyan scientists will proudly stand. Delighted to officiate the AGM. @MusaliaMudavadi@nacosti@KENIAupdates@nrfkenya@TWASnews@AASciences@ISC@SciforAfrica@newscientist@sri_kenya@NI_YGN@IYNC@AUYouthProgram@UNYouthAffairs@AU_WGYD@OfficePCS_KE
Pandemics don’t begin in boardrooms; they begin in our communities.
The ongoing Ebola outbreak in eastern DRC is a stark reminder: every moment counts, and every delay costs lives. That is why Africa’s ability to detect, respond, and contain outbreaks must be built where health threats emerge _ in communities, through trusted health workers, strong surveillance systems, and rapid access to financing.
In my interview with The New Humanitarian, I discuss why investing in local preparedness, empowering communities, and advancing Africa’s #HealthSovereignty is urgent and non-negotiable.
---

At a defining moment for Africa’s #HealthSecurity, I am delighted to announce the appointment of two leaders to join Africa CDC’s mission.
I would like to welcome Professor Placide Mbala Kingebeni as our new Director of Research, Clinical Trials and Innovation, and congratulate Professor Mosoka Papa Fallah on his appointment as Deputy Director.
Professor Mbala’s work during Ebola, mpox, and COVID-19 has set new standards for outbreak response and African-led science. Together with Professor Fallah, renowned for his dedication to advancing research and innovation, they will drive our efforts to accelerate clinical trials, foster innovation, and champion African solutions for African challenges.
These appointments are a testament to our belief that Africa’s greatest strength lies in its people. By empowering our scientists and investing in homegrown talent, we are building a future of health sovereignty, resilience, and preparedness for all.
Congratulations, Professor Mbala and Professor Fallah!
