I used to be like this, I thought there was something deep and alluring about the darkness and moodiness and sullenness. But then I went through something really traumatic and incredibly lonely, and I realized some of the few souls willing to sit with me through the experience, who embodied depth, understanding, and patience, were the kind and positive ones. One conversation everyone from the early days of Castro tried to hide is how so many Cubans fled the island not because of communism, but because Castro desegregated the island and gave nonwhite Cubans equal rights and equal access to services, like education.

Some elites fled because of Castro, yes, but the middle class, the people who didn't own anything substantial, fled to a still segregated U.S. for the same reason the vast majority of them were white. They didn't want to have to commingle with Afro, Chinese, and mixed-race Cubans.

I'm the only person I know of who ever talks about this. It's a huge part of our oral history that we need to stop ignoring because it's ugly. Chances are, your grandparents lied to you. My grandfather admitted it, as did many other white Cubans of the era.

Y'all have been duped by largely racist propaganda. The U.S. hates Cuba because it refuses to bow to its neighbor to the North. Cubans just want sanctions lifted and to be left alone. They are no one's enemy.

I think people underestimate how much money is necessary to be able to do that btw, that's why the main character had to be a billionaire. You need to have a LOT of money to throw in order to get into those circles and even more to protect yourself.
