Innovation alone does not transform health systems.
Integration, context, and scalability do.
Too often, digital health solutions show promise in pilots but fail to deliver sustained impact. Not because the technology isn’t sound—but because it doesn’t align with how real health systems function.
At @Amref_Kenya, we are focused on closing that gap—designing and implementing digital solutions that work within existing systems, respond to real needs, and scale sustainably across communities.
At #GHC26, Aloise Gikunda will join Panel 1: Technological Innovations Improving Care to share practical insights from the field—what it takes to move from innovation to impact, especially for women’s and children’s health.

Maternal and newborn outcomes are improving in Kenyan counties. County data from 2024–2025 shows encouraging progress, with maternal mortality ratios declining in counties such as Kiambu (55.25 → 53.72), Meru (76.01 → 68.56) and Bungoma (95.24 → 68.13).
At the same time, neonatal deaths have decreased in Kilifi (12.87 → 10.85), Nyeri (10.79 → 8.72) and Meru (8.61 → 7.88), while stillbirth rates have also declined across counties including Kiambu, Nyeri and Meru.
Through partnerships with the national government, county governments and partners, @Amref_Kenya's Maternal and Newborn Health Big Bet is supporting efforts to reduce Kenya’s maternal mortality ratio from 355 to below 70 deaths per 100,000 live births, and neonatal mortality from 21 to under 12 deaths per 1,000 live births by 2030.
Investing in quality maternal care saves lives. Partner with us to accelerate progress for every mother and every newborn.

The Ministry of Health, in partnership with Amref Health Africa, World Bicycle Relief, and Buffalo Bicycles Kenya, has today flagged off 500 bicycles for Community Health Promoters (CHPs) in Kwale County to enhance their mobility and efficiency in delivering essential healthcare services at the community level.
Speaking during the event, Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, underscored that improved mobility is vital in strengthening Primary Health Care (PHC) a key pillar of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
She noted that with the new bicycles, CHPs will be able to reach more households, conduct timely follow-ups, support disease prevention initiatives, and respond swiftly during health campaigns and outbreaks.
The initiative reinforces the government’s commitment to empower CHPs with the tools, skills, and logistical support they need to ensure that every Kenyan regardless of location can access quality healthcare without financial hardship.
Our pavilion at the #DevolutionConference2025 was honoured to host H.E. @WilliamsRuto as we showcased Kenya’s community health progress.
Impact so far:
✅ 108K CHPs enrolled
✅ 8.7M households registered
✅ 7.6M households visited

The Director of Public Health and Sanitation, @KiambuCountyGov, Teresia Wanjiru, alongside the @Amref_Kenya team, visited training sites in Githurai Sub-county, where 120 Community Health Promoters (CHPs) are currently participating in a 10-day training on basic health modules. She commended the progress made and acknowledged the strong partnership between #Amref and the @MastercardFdn’s Africa Health Collaborative (AHC) program for their unwavering commitment to strengthening primary healthcare (PHC) in the county.
Through such strategic collaborations, #Amref continues to equip frontline health workers like CHPs with timely and practical knowledge—empowering them to effectively provide essential preventive, promotive, and basic curative services within their communities. A well-functioning Primary Care Network (#PCNs) is like an orchestra, every part working in harmony, every role essential. For mothers like Achuman Emon in @TurkanaCountyKE, this coordination can mean the difference between waiting in fear and receiving timely, life-saving care.
🔹 They bring care closer, connecting families to reliable, timely, and trusted frontline services
🔹 They empower health workers, equipping Community Health Promoters with tools, training, and digital innovations to serve with confidence
🔹 They strengthen health systems, building networks that anticipate challenges, respond rapidly, and adapt to local needs. #Amref4PHC #PCNs

At @Amref_Kenya, we believe that strong Primary Health Care (PHC) begins at the community level. We celebrate the tireless work of Community Health Promoters (CHPs) like Razia, who deliver life-saving hypertension services, including screening, nutrition education, and referrals, right at people’s doorsteps. #Hypertension is often silent, but #CHPs are ensuring that it is no longer overlooked.
Behind every early hypertension diagnosis is a dedicated CHP. #Amref4PHC @County19Nyeri@MOH_Kenya@MOH_DHP@Agikunda@__nyambura@Chu4Uhc

Community Health Workers (CHWs) are the backbone of primary healthcare (PHC), bridging the gap between communities and health services. To enhance their impact, we must register and verify their data in the Kenya Community Health Workers Registry. This ensures proper recognition, training, and resource allocation, improving service delivery and accountability. #SupportCHWs #Amref4PHC @Machakos_Gov @MastercardFdn@Agikunda@weks_note
Through the Transcend Danida project and in collaboration with the @TurkanaCountyKE, Department of Health Services, we conducted a multidisciplinary team (MDT) outreach at the Teremkus Dispensary, Lokichogio Sub County. This initiative provided essential healthcare services, including antenatal care (ANC) profiling, ultrasonography, and non-communicable disease (NCDs) screening, reaching 31 women.
The Lokichogio Sub County Health Management Team (CHMT) is committed to continuing similar efforts to improve healthcare access in the community. #Amref4PHC @Agikunda #BeatNCDsKE @denmarkinkenya
Through the #AmrefLearningforLife program and in partnership with @Machakos_Gov, Department of Health and @MastercardFdn, we kicked off the registration of Community Health Workers (CHWs) at Mutituni Level 4 Hospital - a link facility to three community health units (CHUs): Mutituni, Kivutini, and Nduu. This exercise is essential for verifying the CHPs' data in the Kenya Community Health Workers Registry, which is crucial for effective planning and payment of stipends. #Amref4PHC @MOH_Kenya@MOH_DHP@NdiranguWanjuki@AnneGitimu@weks_note
CHU4UHC on the global stage!
Excited to join @PowerOfBicycles, @Amref__Zambia, @ELMAPhilanthro and @JNJHealthEquity for a parallel session at the upcoming AHAIC conference. We will discuss the progress of CHW professionalization and the mobility challenges they face firsthand.
While the professionalization of CHPs across the country has been greatly commended, those in rural areas still face a persistent challenge of mobility.
