At least 20 percent of Nigerians, about 40 million people are battling various forms of mental illness, according to the World Health Organisation, WHO.
To eliminate Noma Disease, we must commit to;
- Improve the social economic conditions of the poor.
- Improve surveillance for early detection, identification, treatment/or referral of noma patients to the nearest hospital.
- Improve the vaccination coverage of children under 5.

Noma surgical campaigns, usually held four times a year, have been conducted since 2015, with 1,310 surgeries conducted for 918 patients over the past decade.

One of the highlight of 2023 is the landmark announcement of noma being included in WHO NTD list.
With this, the spotlight and attention which noma deserves will be give to it. There will be scaled up activities from all stakeholders responding to noma disease.
Today, the WHO announced the inclusion of noma (cancrum oris or gangrenous stomatitis) in its official list of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs).

To eradicate noma disease, we need to:
1. Increase surveillance on noma disease.
2. Increase access to health care in communities especially in rural village - both access to services and manpower.
3. Include oral health into primary health care as well as train HCW.
Noma cases are not peculiar to the northwest and northeast, it is spreading to northcentral, southwest and southsouth and all cases presented require nutritional intervention- Dr. @AjansonPeter , Deputy Medical Coordinator @MSF_Nigeria.
