In 1999, Zamfara state became the first state to introduce Sharia law in Nigeria.

In 2000, Kano state also introduced the full Sharia legal system. The then governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso publicly declared the implementation on June 21, 2000

In 2002, Boko Baram was founded - had its biggest attack in 2009 and was officially declared a terrorist organization by Nigeria on May 24, 2013

On May 29, 2015 Buhari became Nigeria’s president

In March, 2016 Buhari made Nigeria a full member of the Saudi-led Islamic Military Counter-Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC), which generated a whole lot of controversy internally, if you remember. Because that was seen as a provocative overreach, given Nigeria’s touted secular system. Of course Buhari could care less. Nigeria remained.

In the same 2016, Buhari launched Operation Safe Corridor, a.k.a “Repentant Boko Haram” Program, claiming it was for rehabilitating Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists, who then get integrated into the Nigerian society - free to join the Nigerian military, police force, immigration, customs, civil service, politics, and even aspire to become presidents.

In 2017, Buhari strangely withdraws Nigeria from a whopping 90 international organizations that Nigeria had always belonged to. Nigerians raised alarm and accused Buhari of turning Nigeria into a pariah in other to achieve his Islamization agenda. But Buhari doubled down and claimed it was to cut cost of membership and save Nigeria money.

On May 29, 2023, Bola Ahmed Tinubu became the president of Nigeria under the same party/platform as Buhari, The All Progressives Congress (APC)

In September of 2023, Tinubu moves to recall all Nigerian ambassadors- 109 of them. As at November, 2025 not one of those ambassadorial positions has been filled. Tinubu is now under pressure to fill those vacancies, given Trump’s threats to storm Nigeria and rescue persecuted Christians - something that’s put a lot of diplomatic pressure on his administration.

In late October, 2023 a controversial Indian Islamic preacher who’s a fugitive from Indian Counter-terrorism agencies, Dr. Zakir Naik, visited Nigeria and openly referred to the Nigerian Air Force as “Muslim Airforce” in his X post. Due to his background, Naik is banned from public speaking in several countries including the UK and Malaysia.

Naik was reportedly invited to Nigeria by the Sultan of Sokoto.

To date, “Secular” Nigeria belongs to over a dozen Islamic organizations.

🗞️🇳🇬 LEAKED: How Northern Clerics Plotted ‘Full Jihad’ Against Christians in Jos and Kaduna

BAUCHI, 13 July 2010 - Newly surfaced minutes from a closed-door meeting of Islamic leaders in Bauchi allegedly chaired by Mallam Isa Ali Pantami have revealed a chilling call for “full implementation of jihad” in Plateau and Kaduna States.

According to the leaked document, the session—attended by delegates from Plateau, Bauchi, Kaduna, and Niger under the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI)—outlined a militant agenda to “liberate” Kaduna from Christian political leadership and “reclaim” Jos for Islam.

The minutes accuse former Plateau Governor Jonah Jang of leading a “genocide” against Muslims, alleging 7,000 deaths and widespread destruction of Muslim properties.

The document also contains extremist directives, including the demolition of churches, restriction of Christian worship to designated areas, and the rejection of democratic participation by Muslims.

Participants reportedly threatened death for Muslims cooperating with state authorities, describing them as traitors who must be “wiped out.”

A separate manifesto titled “The Liberation of Kaduna State” denounces Christian Deputy Governor Patrick Yakowa’s leadership as “unacceptable,” vowing to ensure Muslim dominance in Kaduna politics.

The leaked papers point to an organized religious agenda behind years of sectarian violence in the Middle Belt.
