Honored to co-author this op-ed with @StephenSchneck. As former Chairs of @USCIRF, we argue that the Trump administration should reconsider RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s U.S. visit.
The RSS is not a fringe organization. It stands at the center of the Sangh Parivar—a vast Hindu nationalist network linked to severe religious freedom violations in India.

Today in #Sikh History:
On this day in 1977, Sant Jarnail Singh Khalsa became the Jathedar of the Mehta Chowk branch of the Bhindranwale Taksal, also known as the Damdami Taksal. At only 30 years of age, this young leader took over from Sant Kartar Singh, who had recently died in a car accident.
Sant Jarnail Singh soon initiated a movement to reconnect Sikhs with their roots by encouraging them to receive Khande ki Pahul (Amrit) and abstain from intoxication and alcohol. As a result, Sant Jarnail Singh quickly gained popularity. Bhai Amrik Singh, his right-hand man, had recently assumed the presidency of the All India Sikh Student Federation (AISSF). Together, they would revitalize the Panth (Sikh community).
Eventually, Sant Jarnail Singh joined forces with the Shiromani Akali Dal to launch the Dharam Yudh Morcha, a movement advocating for the Anandpur Sahib Resolution. Due to increasing brutality and human rights abuses by the government, the Indian government eventually attacked the Sri Harimandar Sahib Complex. In the Battle of Amritsar, Sant Jarnail Singh led the defenders and successfully repelled the attack. He became a Shahid (martyr) in the battle.

For years, Alberta separatist leader Jeff Rath controlled two First Nations’ settlement trusts and drained millions from them, allegedly without consent. Now court orders, asset freezes and an investigative receiver are closing in — forcing him to account for tens of millions of dollars in disputed trust money.
