Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Maharashtra expresses deep concern over the continuing malnutrition crisis in Melghat (Amravati District), as highlighted by the Bombay High Court. The observation that nearly 5,000 deaths in the past two years are linked to malnutrition exposes a grave humanitarian and public health failure that demands urgent attention and action by the government.

For a region with a population of 2.2 lakh people, there is only one 50-bed hospital. Adding to this problem, there is an unacceptable delay by the concerned authorities in operationalising the proposed 300-bed hospital in Dharni, along with vacant posts for paediatricians, gynaecologists, and dietitians. This has left vulnerable patients especially mothers and children without adequate care. There is a severe contrast between welfare schemes on paper and the ground reality.

The High Court’s remarks on the state’s priorities underline the need for immediate, time-bound action. Incentives for doctors in tribal areas, strengthening of nutrition programmes, and proper utilisation of available funds are essential steps. Right to quality health is the need of hour and reflects sustainable development.

Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Maharashtra urges the government to act with urgency, compassion, and accountability to ensure dignity, health, and justice for the people of Melghat. There must also be clear accountability for those responsible for this grave neglect in one of the most critical sectors of healthcare.
