It demonstrates the key weaknesses in the Unionist caricature of Scotland:

Scottish merchant wealth → Indian merchant wealth;

Scottish aristocratic incorporation → princes/zamindars;

Scottish Westminster participation → Indian Westminster participation;

Scottish imperial soldiers → Indian imperial soldiers;

Scottish troops suppressing Scots → Indian troops suppressing Indians;

Glasgow "Second City" → Calcutta "Second City";

Scottish imperial overrepresentation → Indian indispensability to imperial manpower.

Unionists usually fall back on the claim that Scotland’s incorporation was uniquely "voluntary." But treaty form isn't dividing line between union and colonial incorporation.

British expansion in India repeatedly proceeded through treaties concluded under military, economic or political coercion like Scotland.
Scotland’s case goes further though. The 1707 settlement wasn't just coerced; our constitutional case is that the Scottish Parliament itself lacked demonstrated authority to alienate the sovereignty of the Community of the Realm. So the supposed "voluntary Union" was both coerced and constitutionally imperfect.

This is new ground for all of us and it’s been a very steep learning curve! We were denied any knowledge of the Scottish constitution, the rights we are entitled to by virtue of British obligations in international law and agreement or the real obstacle to self determination. You will find, shockingly, that most UK lawyers are in exactly the same boat and many employed by the Scottish Administration to opine on these questions do so with shocking levels of confidence in the common errors of the fundamentally uninformed and mistaken! You’re ahead of the curve, in other words!

I have to tell you as someone who regularly attends UN sessions and speaks to lawyers and advocates working in international law that is not actually the case. There are three separate foundations for identifying Scotland as entitled to self- determination. The failure of the English state to give effect to the partnership agreement/treaty as evidenced by the continuation of the crowns (subjugation to an alien sovereignty rather than a partnership) is, we are told, the strongest and puts Scotland legally into the same category as the Baltic states, entitled to recovery of (a paused but unceded) sovereignty rather than to create a brand new state. That’s real because it forces constitutional resumption, core constitutional rights of the people (not the English privilege system) and principles underpinning the authority of people over government come back into force in modern clothing. No more calling a choice of unaccountable politicians every five years ‘democracy’. All too many of the indy establishment figures will do their best to keep that top down system so recovery is vitally important!
